We are here to preserve and support continued access to our local established climbing areas in the Durango region, and to build connections between our climbing community members.

Greetings Durango Climbers,

Despite the finger freezing frigid outside, we are excited to announce two opportunities for you to get involved with local climbing.

General Meeting and Elections
Join us, one and all, for a gathering of the Durango Climbing Coalition. We will give some quick updates (including on Cascade Canyon access), hold elections for Chair of the Community Committee, and take the opportunity to see old and get to know new climbing friends.
When: Tuesday January 28th @ 6:00PM
Where: Ska Brewing Tasting Room - upstairs

If you can't make it to the meeting and would like to vote for Community Committee Chair, please submit your anonymous vote via this link.

Volunteer Route Setting @ the Rec Center
The Rec Center offers the broader community, young and old, an opportunity to climb on three different ropes, but often times the routes are lacking and in disarray. In the last couple of years the DCC has stepped up to set more and complete routes for the community. We need routes of all difficulties, from kid-friendly ladder to 5.12 or harder - all are welcome. No setting experience required.

Volunteers are welcome to come any of the following times. It would be nice to show up 15 minutes early so you are ready to go and can take advantage of the whole 2 hours - it goes fast when route setting.

Thurs, Jan 30 6-7:45 PM (they close at 8)
Fri, Jan 31, 6-7:45 PM
Sat, Feb 1, 4-5:45 PM (they close at 6)

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Come join us for our first meeting of the year THIS MONDAY,
March 11th from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at Zia Taqueria — we’ll be upstairs at the north Zia’s location.

We’ll be sharing some of the amazing things that the DCC was able to accomplish in 2023 and what we’re hoping to accomplish as the DCC in 2024 - BUT we can’t do it without you!

Feel free to show up early or stay late and mingle.

Durango Climbers Coalition, 2023 Annual Report

Kiosk signage completed at the X-Rock trail head. We contributed $6,000 to the project.

Helped coordinate the extensive trail work and cliff stabilization done at East Animas and Sailing Hawks in conjunction with the BLM, City of Durango, and Southwest Conservation Corps

Held a community work day in conjunction with the City of Durango and Southwest Conversation Corps at the Euro Boulder at Sailing Hawks in August.

Held a bolt and anchor replacement day at the Golf Wall in August. Replaced 30 bolts in partnership with the American Safe Climbing Association.

With hardware from ASCA we replaced an additional 37 bolts and anchors, and placed 20 lower off hook anchors at Cascade Canyon, Golf Wall, East Animas, and Lakeview. Also created a community Google Docs spreadsheet to keep better track of our ongoing work.

A successful Fall Climber Beer Nights at Ska Brewing:
we raised $1891 for the DCC, bringing the community together for a fun evening!

We navigated a cruxy transition to an entirely new set of Board members. Our previous board was Taylor Luneau, Matt King, Andrea Hassler, Zac Robinson, and Olivia Wetzel. Our new board consists of Ana-Lidia Anderson, Jeremy May, Ruben Guadiana, and Sebastiaan Zuidweg. We are grateful to each and every person who has served on our board.

And last but not least we took a break for December to rejuvenate.

Sincerely,
The Durango Climbers Coalition

Luke Mehall, President
Jeremy May, Vice President
Ana-Lidia Anderson, Secretary
Ruben Guadiana, Treasurer
Sebastiaan Zuidweg, Board Member
