The Balourdet Quartet concluded their Duluth visit on Monday with a masterclass at the University of Minnesota Duluth and a free public outreach concert at Lake Superior College. While they needed to drive to Minneapolis for a return flight to Seattle, they did manage to squeeze in a tour of Gamut Music Inc. to view their traditional string manufacturing and luthier operations with Matinee Musicale board member Ed Martin.

At this past Sunday's concert, the Balourdet Quartet performed an exciting program of Puccini, Shostakovich and Beethoven. After multiple standing ovations, the audience was treated to an encore of a piece on their new album, Karim Al-Zand's Strange Machines (2022), I. Alberti Machine.

The Balourdet Quartet perform this Sunday, so it’s time to introduce the final two quartet members, Benjamin Zannoni and Russell Houston. Originally from Houston, Texas, Benjamin is the violist of the Balourdet Quartet. He performed around the world and is a recent graduate from the New England Conservatory, and has also received degrees from Rice University, Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School.

Russell Houston, from Dallas, Texas, is the cellist of the Balourdet Quartet. He is the winner of the Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition and Sorantin International Competition and performed as soloist with orchestras including the Dallas and Plano Symphonies. He holds degrees from the New England Conservatory, Rice University, Colburn Conservatory, and Northwestern University.

With Matinee Musicale's season opening concert by the Balourdet Quartet fast approaching, we continue our introduction of the quartet's members. Violinist Justin DeFilippis is a New Jersey native, a graduate of the New England Conservatory, Rice University Shepherd School of Music, and Juilliard School Pre-College Division. He has collaborated alongside artists including the Silkroad Ensemble, Jon Kimura Parker, and Matthew Lipman, as well as members of the Ying and American Quartets.

Matinee Musicale wants to introduce you to the members of the Balourdet Quartet, who will open the 2026-27 season on Sunday, October 11. First up is Angela Bae, who was born in Seoul, Korea, and who began her musical aspirations at the age of three. Angela has appeared as a soloist in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Disney Hall, and Sydney Town Hall, and when she was 16, she became the youngest ever Concertmaster of the American Youth Symphony in LA. She has won awards in Korea and the United States, and as a chamber musician, she has performed with artists including Gil Shaham, Kenneth Goldsmith, Geoffrey Nutall, and Alexander Sitkovetsky. Ms. Bae is a recent graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music Professional String Quartet Program where she studied with Donald Weilerstein.

Matinee Musicale’s 2026-27 season kicks off in less than two weeks with the Balourdet Quartet! Angela, Justin, Benjamin, and Russell present more than 70 concerts per season, including recent debuts at Carnegie and Wigmore Halls, and they recently completed their term as the first ever Quartet-in-Residence at the Seattle Chamber Music Society. We’re so excited that they are returning to Duluth!
