We give thanks to and work in solidarity with the original and indefinite stewards of the land that we call Detroit, the nations of the Three Fires Confederacy, Ojibwe, Keepers of the Knowledge; Odawa, Keepers of the Trade Routes; and Bodewademi, Keepers of the Fire. We hope to continue to learn from and with these caretakers who see the sacredness of the lands and waters here, who can lead us into a future where respect and reverence for our ecological kin guide us.💚

Fall is a busy time of year at GLS! Last weekend, we enjoyed playing recycling sorting games at DPSCD Harvest Fest, signing people up for curbside carts at the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy Harvest Fest, and passing out buttons made by previous students at the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition Summit! When we're not sharing resources and doing reuse crafts, we've been buzzin with excitement as we get ready to start our in-school programming for the year🐝

We had some fun events last week! First, we hosted an activity station at the Detroit River Water Festival, where we created a Detroit River using a yoga mat. Students were given different trash and plastic items, and as the activity went on, they saw how those items could end up in the river, and we talked about what happens after (i.e. microplastic enters our waterways!). Students explored the three Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle, and realized that sometimes, protecting our water starts with the small choices each of us makes. It was great to see students making the connection between what happens on the ground around us and what eventually ends up in the Detroit River!

We also hosted a Professional Development Day for OBD Park Champions and other colleagues of ours! There, we had two morning sessions: “Detroit as a HeartSafe Community” with Dr. Dunne from the City of Detroit Fire Department, and “How Do We Get People to Show Up and Keep Coming Back?” featuring a panel discussion on community-based volunteer engagement. Then, we did CPR training, giving our Champions a new skills, certification, and tool that may help them keep their communities safe. We had a great time!

For our last post during Michigan's Pollution Prevention Week, we're sharing the impact of just one of our Everyday Champion mini-grant awardees! After receiving the award through Our Backyard Detroit, Detroit Heals Detroit hosted two clean-up events and picked up 103 lbs of litter. How inspiring! PFAS are a group of widely used and potentially harmful chemicals. PFAS exposure has been linked to several health effects, including thyroid disease and liver damage. Green Living Science signed a letter of support for proposed Senate Bills 503-505, which address microplastic pollution in Michigan. The Michigan Environmental Council and the Sierra Club put the letter together to send to Michigan Senate representatives, asking them to bring the bills to the Senate floor for a vote. At Green Living Science, we hope to see a future where the health of our ecosystems and human populations is protected and plastic pollution is addressed.
