It was a perfect day for a cleanup at historic Clark Park in Detroit’s Southwest neighborhood!
It’s worth mentioning that when we got to park, there really wasn’t that much trash to clean! Sure, we managed to fill a few bags, but for the most part the park was in excellent shape. It was a reminder that, however well-intentioned our cleanups are, it’s important that we don’t reinforce harmful narratives about the city and our participation in it. Narratives like “Detroit is dirty and run-down,” or “Detroit needs people to come save it.” You get the idea. Instead, our day in the park invited us to remember that Detroit is vibrant. Detroit is beautiful. And Detroit never left. ✌️🇲🇽🌳
