Today, Motown Museum honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on what would have been his 97th birthday.
Dr. King helped propel the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, demonstrating the power of nonviolent protest in the pursuit of equality, integration, voting rights, labor rights, and equal justice under the law. His dedicated advocacy helped reshape our society, providing a guiding light that we still look towards today.
Motown Records recorded and distributed many of Dr. King’s most enduring speeches, including his iconic “I Have A Dream” speech delivered in both Detroit and Washington. Motown recording artist Stevie Wonder was a driving force behind the push to recognize Dr. King’s birthday as a national holiday.
On Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 19th, Motown Museum will host special immersive tours for visitors celebrating Dr. King’s legacy. Until then, please join us today as we continue to sing Stevie’s inspiring lyrics: “We all know everything that he stood for, time will bring. For in peace, our hearts will sing, thanks to Martin Luther King - Happy Birthday to you!”
