Detroit recorded an 89% drop in juvenile homicide victims this summer and a 25% decline in overall homicides.
From June through August 2026, police recorded one juvenile homicide victim, compared with nine during the same period in 2025. Overall homicides fell from 56 to 42, while juvenile nonfatal shooting victims declined from 23 to 18, a roughly 22% decrease.
Mayor Mary Sheffield and Police Chief Todd Bettison credited police work, community violence intervention and the city’s $1.5 million Occupy the Summer initiative with helping reduce violence.
According to DPD’s latest figures, Detroit recorded 105 homicides from January through September, down 18% from 128 during the same period last year. Juvenile homicide victims fell from 13 to four.
Sheffield said the goal is to carry the work beyond summer and make Detroit safer throughout the year.
