Aretha Franklin’s family moved to Detroit in the late 1940s. Her father, Rev. C.L. Franklin’s, New Bethel Baptist Church was on Hastings Street in Black Bottom. He was nationally known as the man with the “million-dollar voice”. The church was also known for its gospel choir, in which Aretha sang. After signing her first music contract, she made her first recordings at the church!
In 1961, the church was forced to move and demolished, along with other parts of Black Bottom, so that the Chrysler Freeway could be constructed. The new church location became the center of the Civil Rights Movement in Detroit!
Fun Fact: Rev. C.L. Franklin helped organize MLK’s Walk to Freedom in 1963!
