CELEBRATING A WAVES OF CHANGE HONOREE

As Avalon Healing Center celebrates 20 Years of Healing & Hope, we are honored to recognize Shoma Pal with our Waves of Change Award at our 20th Anniversary Celebration aboard the Ovation Yacht on September 24, 2026.

Shoma’s story with Avalon began when we were still known as WC SAFE. She helped secure our first-ever funding and served as a founding member of our first Board of Directors. Historically, she has been Avalon’s longest-serving board member and has played a pivotal role in the growth and success of our organization.

Her vision, leadership, generosity, and unwavering belief in survivors have helped Avalon grow into Michigan’s largest and most comprehensive sexual assault center—serving more than 30,000 survivors of sexual violence over the past 20 years.

Shoma, thank you for believing in Avalon from the very beginning and for helping us create waves of change that continue to move our mission forward. We are so proud to call you an Avalonian.

4th Annual Stomping Out Human Trafficking 💙

The Detroit Human Trafficking Task Force’s 4th Annual Stomping Out Human Trafficking brought the Metro Detroit community together for a powerful day of awareness, prevention, education, and connection.

This year’s event was heavily attended by youth and families, creating an important opportunity to have conversations about human trafficking, safety, prevention, and how young people can recognize trusted adults and resources in their community.

The event brought together law enforcement, survivor advocates, service providers, community organizations, and local families. Attendees heard a powerful survivor story, connected with experts working on the front lines, and visited community resource tables to learn more about recognizing and responding to human trafficking.

More than 150 free boxed lunches from Panera were distributed throughout the day, along with free ice cream from our partner, Keeping Kids Safe ice cream tour. Families enjoyed music from our DJ, community vendors, youth activities, and a collaborative community art project that gave attendees another way to participate and connect.

The strong turnout—especially from young people—made this year’s event an incredible example of what can happen when a community comes together around prevention, education, survivor support, and awareness.

Shoutout to our Director of Healing Services and Secretary for Human Trafficking Task Force - Amy Smith! Her 20+ years of advocacy in our community is invaluable.

This year, Avalon Healing Center proudly celebrates 20 years of serving survivors in our community with compassion, connection, and care.

As we reflect on this incredible journey, we’re reminded of a special memory from 2022—our staff photo shoot, where we celebrated the true heart of our work: the dedicated people who show up every day to support healing and transformation. Those photos captured more than smiles; they captured the passion, commitment, and purpose that define Avalon.

Today, we also celebrate how our mission continues to grow through programs like Unmuted, creating spaces where survivors voices are heard, stories are honored, and healing happens together.

Please join us in welcoming Helena Hill, our new Operations Specialist, to the Avalon Healing Center team! 🎉

As our Operations Specialist, Helena will bring together their passion for strong, efficient systems and their commitment to meaningful work that makes a difference in people’s lives.

Here is what Helena shared about her journey:
I graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work in Human Resources, Sales and Marketing, Billing, and Operations. Along the way, I discovered that operations is where I truly thrive. I enjoy bringing organization to busy environments, solving problems, and finding ways to help teams work more efficiently.

For the past two and a half years, I’ve worked in the mental health field, where I wore many hats within the practice. While I gained experience in a variety of roles, what I enjoyed most wasn’t the different responsibilities—it was being part of people’s journeys. As the first person many clients met, whether over the phone or in person, I had the privilege of helping create a welcoming first impression and watching individuals become more comfortable and confident over time.

That experience reinforced something I’ve always known about myself: I find the most fulfillment in work that helps others.

Joining Avalon Healing Center as an Operations Specialist allows me to bring together two things I’m most passionate about: building strong, efficient systems and contributing to work that makes a meaningful difference in people’s lives. I’m excited to support a mission I believe in while doing the work I enjoy most.

We’re so excited to have her join the Avalon family and look forward to all they will contribute to our team and our mission of supporting survivors. 💙
