Plot twist: the final week of school was just the beginning. 📚✨

Marcus Garvey Academy students wrapped up the year by celebrating a transformed library, meeting an author, exploring a new learning oasis, and taking home books for summer reading.

This project was made possible through the generosity of DPSCD alumna Denise Lewis, whose investment helped create a space where students can read, learn, discover, and dream bigger.

And thanks to First Book and General Motors, every student left with a summer reading kit filled with books and activities to help keep the pages turning all summer long.

It’s proof that when alumni give back, the impact can last for generations… and great stories don’t stop when school ends!

Here’s a sneak peek into the party everyone has been talking about for the past few weeks.

On Saturday, May 16, we did it again (per ) and threw another banger for the books. From lobster bites to unforgettable performances by Charity, Amerie, Jeff Ponders and friends, we made sure the night was out of this world. But the best part of it all? Every moment supported DPSCD students.

The Foundation exists to help close opportunity gaps and connect students to the resources, experiences, and pathways they need to reach their fullest potential. This night is more than a vibe. It’s a springboard for student success.

We are incredibly grateful for Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s support to fuel auto tech programming at Western High School and Breithaupt! Together, with Ford Motor Company, Ford Philanthropy, and DPSCD we will modernize and revitalize programming at these schools to ensure our students are future ready and positioned for promising six figure careers!

We love when stories have a happy ending. 📚✨

This week marked the start of an exciting new chapter for the Marcus Garvey Academy library. Made possible through the generosity of DPSCD alumna Denise Lewis and the collaboration of an incredible village of supporters, the transformation is now complete.

Together with Marcus Garvey Academy leadership and DPSCD’s literacy team, we helped transform the space into a learning oasis—complete with new books, updated furnishings, a vibrant mural by DPSCD alumni artists Siana and SuVon Treece, and resources designed to inspire curiosity, discovery, and a love of reading.

And because every great story deserves memorable characters, students also met local author Susan Wade and left with summer reading bags thanks to our friends at First Book and General Motors, helping keep the pages turning long after the final bell rings.

📚 A good book can open a door. This week, 43,000 of them did just that. 📚

The DPSCD Foundation partnered with General Motors, First Book, and Detroit Public Schools Community District to deliver 43,000 books to 77 schools across Detroit.

Valued at nearly $500,000, this investment will support literacy, summer learning, and STEM exploration for thousands of DPSCD students.

A special thank you to the General Motors volunteers who spent the week sorting, packing, and delivering books to help make this initiative possible.

Because every student deserves the opportunity to learn, imagine, and dream bigger.
