Holbrook Farms' mission is to provide wellness retreats serving military survivors. Holbrook Farms Retreat, Inc.

Survivors of Heroes Retreats are hosted at Holbrook Farms in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. is a nonprofit charity dedicated to providing all-expense paid getaways for military survivors, widows and families who have lost their loved ones in military service. The experience provides survivors an opportunity to get away and spend time with those who have gone through similar tragedies, helping them through their grieving process. Holbrook Farms is a working farm with maple syrup, small animals, orchards and gardens. We are a Bed & Breakfast style Event Center with current space for 12 overnight guests where families and friends can enjoy all Minnesota Lake Country has to offer. It is the primary location for 'Survivors of Heroes' retreats, but can be utilized for weddings, family reunions, and other retreats and social events.

As we move into Fall, we recognize a simple truth: healing happens between people, and Holbrook Farms is a space where that happens. No magic agenda, no perfect speaker lineup...just space where people connect and find healing together. Retreats are done for the year and the chairs are empty, but the women we met this summer reminded us that the healing at Holbrook Farms will ripple through their lives for years to come. Thank you for being a part of the Holbrook Farms Family.

🎶It's the final countdown🎶
We are extending our Hearts for Holbrook campaign two more weeks! There are matching dollars still available and we'd love to sponsor more retreat guests for next summer!
This photo is from our Mothers of the Fallen Retreat in August. We are still smiling and reflecting on the memories. Some were really tough stories shared. Some were hilarious moments as the group adventured and enjoyed new experiences. It was our privilege to host these beautiful women, and give them a chance to meet each other and support each other in the deep grief of losing a child. We are so grateful they said "yes" to the Holbrook experience, and we look forward to welcoming many more military survivors in the future!

You've heard us mention Troll Hunting...it's a really cool addition to the Detroit Lakes area by artist Thomas Dambo. This one is Barefoot Frida, and we visited her last week during the Alumni Retreat. Frida is a silly troll, and encourages us to spend time outside barefoot. At Holbrook Farms, we intentionally spend time in nature--there is space for healing in the trees and on the water. And a lot of times we LAUGH! As one surviving sister said, "What surprised me most? The laughter. I didn’t think I’d laugh like that again.”
Grief is complicated--but sometimes a little laughter and silliness is just what people need...if you're struggling today, take off your shoes and stick out your tongue just for a minute...and if you're a Holbrook alum, send a message to someone who made your time there better and a little more fun!

Wow! After our amazing Community Event and Troy Boy Memorial Car Show last weekend, we are at 40% of our Hearts for Holbrook fundraising goal! We've raised enough to sponsor 20 military survivors' retreat experience at Holbrook Farms and our goal is to sponsor 30 more!

What a day! Thank you to everyone who came to our Hearts for Holbrook Community Event. Huge thanks to our Alumni for setting up and managing the entire event. Thanks to Tom Barry for donating and cooking delicious food. Thanks to the O'Fer Sweet Ice Cream Truck for sweet treats, and Mick Klien for awesome tunes. And special thanks to Sarah Linden Hudson for orchestrating the 2nd annual Troy Boy Memorial Car Show. We saw everything from motorcycles to classic trucks and jeeps, and we honored the fallen in our Field of Flags. It's always good to spend time with our Holbrook Farms Family!

We remember this day. We remember those we lost and the way it changed our world. Nearly all of our Holbrook Alumni lost their loved one in post-9/11 military service. Reach out if you need a listening ear today. Share your story. Say the names of those we lost. They are not forgotten. You are not alone.

Alumni Retreat is underway! We all arrived last night, and spent today catching up and exploring and serving the Detroit Lakes community. We are a small group but we’re getting lots done! After a tour of the amazing Boys and Girls Club, we set up for their family carnival night. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the VFW, and said hi to two of our favorite trolls Alexa and Ronny Funny-Face.

Hope to see lots of familiar faces at Bucks Mill Brewing for Pint Night tonight, and on Saturday for the Community Event at Holbrook Farms!
