“It’s ok not to be ok’”
That’s the slogan for a new resource available to people in Becker and Clay Counties (and elsewhere in the US but this has embedded LOCAL resources). We all know that varying stages of mental health are a common issue and now you can help yourself through this content-rich web site. “CredibleMind” was created by California professionals to fill a gap because 56% of counties in the US don’t have a practicing psychiatrist.
The site is FREE, confidential and credible 24 hours a day/7 days a week. It has THOUSANDS of resources within a huge list of concerns from friendships to anxiety. 13 year olds can use a kid-friendly version while 18 year olds on up have the full site. Check it out and spread the word!

There is something for everyone via the ENGAGE Program in Detroit Lakes. Teri Holehause told Kiwanis members of the long list of activities she leads for 50 plus year olds/active older adults. Group walks, kayaking, biking, snowshoeing, dance classes, chair yoga, and water aerobics are just some of the offerings. The group has also taken bus trips to Twins baseball games, Chanhassen Theater productions, and the Wisconsin Dells. The ENGAGE club house is on the lower level of the Historic Holmes Theater where potlucks, speakers, games, art classes, book club and volunteer activities generate. Contact Teri or see DLCCC’s website for ENGAGE. Teri’s personality is infectious!

You may think Narcan is only needed to administer to drug addicts in an emergency. Part of that is right but Vanessa Collmann from Becker County Public Health told Kiwanis about the sad story of a baby that found a pill on the floor when crawling around and consumed it! Thankfully Naloxone (Narcan) was administered before the child lapsed into a death spiral! The same can be said about any of us after surgery. We might think we haven't taken our pain-med so overdosed! Once again Narcan to the rescue.

There were 678 opioid-related deaths in Minnesota in 2024. It is best to have the Narcan, easy-to-administer nasal spray, in your home, office, school or church just in case of an emergency. The patient then has to be rushed to the hospital before it wears off in 30-90 minutes. Place them on their side because vomiting may result before an ambulance arrives. If they don't need Narcan, administering it will NOT harm them. The Good Samaritan Law has been expanded in MN so you can’t be sued for trying to help.

Becker County Human Services has FREE Narcan available at their office south of the Post Office in Detroit Lakes, no questions asked.
