Leg senate file 2201, 2472: Do you know how recently enacted law changes school funding formulas? School finance is dense, so here's the short version: these two laws determine how much money districts have to work with. Senate File 2201 raises the state's per-pupil funding rate by 2% for the upcoming year which funds the general pool districts draw from for staffing, professional development, and programming, including what is used for students receiving Tier 1 interventions in the regular classroom. Senate File 2472 is a larger overhaul of how property taxes fund schools statewide; the piece most relevant to classrooms is that it redirects a larger share of the state's SAVE fund (previously dedicated to school infrastructure) toward property tax relief instead, phased in over the next five years. Neither law targets gifted programming specifically, but both affect the overall budget picture your district is working within this year and going forward. We hope you have an excellent start to the new school year! https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ba=SF2201&ga=91 https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ba=SF2472&ga=91

Legislative House File 2676: In addition to other, wide-ranging implications, this new law caps daily screen time for digital instruction in grades K-5 at one hour, a response to growing concerns over potential effects of excessive screen use on children. Understanding the exemptions matters when planning and providing exceptional programming for gifted and advanced students. It’s also crucial gifted educators work with district administrators and understand district plans to ensure they are able to make use of education technology for enrichment. Make familiarizing yourself with recently enacted legislation that impacts our gifted students part of your back-to-school routine. This year, the legislature enacted a law that formalizes much of what's long been in Iowa Code and adds to it. This one has the potential to create major changes to how we do business, including automatic access to advanced math and ELA pathways, optional statewide testing at grade level of instruction instead of age, and more. https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ba=SF2220&ga=91

Today we celebrate International Youth Day!

At ITAG, our focus is on what happens when talented and gifted youth get the support they need to thrive. Gifted students need the space to ask bigger questions and explore their interests.
