Friends of Reinstein Woods is a volunteer-led, nonprofit organization that supports the environmental education programs offered by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at Reinstein Woods -- a nearly 300-acre nature preserve in Depew, NY. We provide vital financial and volunteer support for programs aimed at school children, teachers, youth from underserved neighborhoods, and the general public. We also support stewardship projects designed to protect and restore the natural habitats at Reinstein Woods. Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve is made up of forests, ponds, wetlands. Reinstein Woods is included in the New York State Inclusive Recreation Resource Center's online database, which provides information about physical accessibility and social inclusion of recreation areas, facilities, parks, and programs around New York State. Trails are open to the public daily, year-round, dawn to dusk. The Education Center is open Monday to Friday 9am-4:30pm and Saturday 1-4:30pm. Restrooms are available seven days a week during most daylight hours. Dogs and other pets are not allowed at the nature preserve (except for trained service animals). Reinstein Woods is part of the State Nature and Historic Preserve Trust. Please remember that the following are prohibited in order to protect the preserve's resources:
- Pets and horses, including therapy/comfort animals (trained service dogs and miniature horses are permitted)
- Feeding wildlife
- Taking or releasing plants or animals
- Bikes, skateboards and motorized vehicles on the trails
- Hunting, trapping and fishing
- Firearms
- Boating, canoeing and kayaking
- Alcoholic beverages and glass containers
- Camping and campfires

At Reinstein Woods Education Center, you can borrow a sensory kit for free. This kit provides tools to promote comfort, communication, and confidence as individuals navigate overwhelming environments.

Each bag has:
🎧 Noise-cancelling headphones to reduce overwhelming sounds
🖼 Laminated communication board
🗒 Small whiteboard with a dry-erase marker
🕶 Sunglasses to help manage bright lights
🧩Assorted sensory and fidget items

These kits are available during our Education Center hours from Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm and Saturdays from 1 pm to 4 pm at 94 Honorine Drive, Depew, NY 14043

Last week, Reinstein Woods staff and Buffalo High Schoolers visited Buffalo River for the Day in the Life of the Niagara River and Lake Erie Watershed program! The students learned how to measure various quality indicators such as temperature, turbidity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, phosphate, and nitrogen levels. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn about their local watershed with hands-on experience.

Afterwards, we shared our results with NASA's Globe Database to track the progress of the Buffalo River, which were overall positive. The students truly became scientists for a day.

Thank you to the teachers, students, staff, and volunteers who supported this wonderful event.

The leaves are just turning in Reinstein Woods! Bring your kid to our free public program, Story in the Woods, on Saturday, October 10 at 11 am.

They will enjoy hearing a nature story, followed by a guided walk in the woods. All children attending programs must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
For children ages 3–7.

We expect our main parking lot and driveways to be sealed and striped between September 30 and October 2 (weather-dependent).

Our team will work on signs to guide you to temporary alternative trail access. We encourage you to park on the Reinstein Woods side of Honorine Drive and enter at the pedestrian gates by the bus gate or at the end of Honorine Drive. Please avoid walking on the newly sealed pavement until signs and barriers are removed.
