Children’s Hospital Colorado reports that pediatric ER visits involving mental health concerns jumped about 65% from 2019 to 2025, and the number could climb even higher this year.

One of the hospital's child psychiatrists points to a big driver: many young people can't get consistent, affordable, ongoing care, so the ER becomes the fallback. Insurance barriers make it harder still.

There are some potential bright spots, one of them being a state law that aims to improve behavioral health coverage, HB25-1002, a bill we spearheaded through the Colorado legislature in partnership with inseparable.

We hope Disagree Healthier serves as a reminder that while political differences are real, there are also important opportunities to find common ground.

“We have some serious challenges facing us, and I think we can all acknowledge the seriousness of the state of our healthcare system here in this state,” said Joshua Ewing, Healthier Colorado’s executive director. “What we hope to accomplish [...] is having a discussion from different perspectives about how we move forward.”

What does it look like to disagree without contempt? 💬

Check out this article from The Daily Sentinel of Grand Junction about Disagree Healthier, an event we cohosted with Healthier United at Colorado Mesa University to bring people together around an important question: How can we improve the way we debate health issues, for the sake of our individual well-being and the health of our democracy?

Representative Rick Taggart and State Representative Elizabeth Velasco, CO HD57, demonstrated that different perspectives don’t have to divide us. We can engage in meaningful conversation, listen to one another, and experience genuine disagreement without losing respect for the person across the table.

Colorado Reps. Rick Taggart and Elizabeth Velasco discussed rising healthcare costs, Medicaid funding, and TABOR during a civil debate hosted at Colorado Mesa University.
