New research from the National Emergency Medical Services Information System (NEMSIS) Database (2021–2023) highlights differences in pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes and reinforces the importance of timely recognition, CPR, AED access, and emergency response.

Recovery after sudden cardiac arrest is about more than physical healing.

A new study, co-authored by SCAF Advisory Council members Alexander M. Presciutti and Sarah M. Perman, along with SCAF co-founder Mary Newman, explores the brain health challenges faced by cardiac arrest survivors and their family caregivers.

Participants shared the stressors they experience, including cognitive changes after cardiac arrest, concerns about future decline, and the emotional and practical responsibilities of caregiving. They also identified the strategies that have helped them adapt and move forward, including connecting with peers, accessing mental health support, practicing acceptance, staying physically active, and using practical tools like organizational aids, visual reminders, and pacing daily activities.

These findings reinforce an important message: recovery doesn't end at hospital discharge. Survivors and caregivers benefit from ongoing support, resources, and a community that understands the journey.

This October, Jess's husband, Franklin, her daughter, Miriam, and a group of friends will honor her memory by riding 100 miles to raise funds for the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation. Their goal is to help prevent other families from experiencing the devastating loss they have endured.

MYTH vs. FACT

❌ Myth: Sudden cardiac arrest and a heart attack are the same thing.

✅ Fact: They are two different medical emergencies.

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart is blocked. A sudden cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction that causes the heart to suddenly stop beating, cutting off blood flow to the brain and the rest of the body.

While a heart attack can sometimes trigger a sudden cardiac arrest, they are not the same, and they require different emergency responses.

Knowing the difference could save a life:
❤️ Heart attack: Call 911 immediately.
⚡ Sudden cardiac arrest: Call 911, begin CPR right away, and use an AED as soon as one is available.

Learning to recognize sudden cardiac arrest and knowing how to respond with CPR and an AED can make all the difference.

As we gather with family and friends to celebrate Independence Day, we wish everyone a safe, happy, and memorable holiday.

Whether you're attending a parade, enjoying a backyard barbecue, or watching fireworks, remember that preparedness saves lives. Take a moment to know where the nearest AED is located, and don't hesitate to act if someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest. Immediate CPR and early defibrillation can make all the difference.

This Fourth of July, let's celebrate not only our nation's independence, but also the power of communities coming together to protect one another.
