Safe Families for Children Western PA Chapter

Safe Families for Children Western PA Chapter Safe Families for Children is a nonprofit, volunteer movement that gives hope and support to families

Safe Families for Children Ministering God’s Love to Families in need Safe Families for Children offers volunteers an opportunity to transform their communities by reaching out to care for children whose parents are facing challenges. Right from their own homes, families participate in ministry by offering hospitality, hope, and the love of Christ to families in a crisis that could temporarily jeo

pardize the parents’ ability to provide safety and stability for their children. As a Safe Family, volunteers host children for a short period of time, allowing the child's parent(s) to focus on resolving the issues that led to the crisis. The average length of a child's stay in a Safe Family home is about 45 days but is assessed on a case-by-case basis and can vary in length, depending on the needs of child and each family. After being screened and trained by Bethany staff, volunteers join a support network offering families temporary respite care for their children during the earliest signs of a crisis. Safe Families, who are primarily from area churches, open their homes and provide a child with a safe, nurturing place to live while his or her parents work to bring stability back to their family. Because placement with a Safe Family is voluntary, parents never have to worry about losing custody of their children while they work out their problems, and they may request that their children return at any time. Safe Families is not foster care or adoption—the goal of the program is the reunification of children with their biological parent(s) in a home that is more stable and healthy. Mothers and fathers going through a temporary crisis can request a volunteer Safe Family to host their children (from newborns through age 17) while they work to resolve the issues that led to the situation. Most children placed with a Safe Family are 6 years old or younger. Whenever possible, children stay with a family in the same community and remain in contact with their biological parents through phone calls and visits. In addition to screening and training volunteers, Bethany also offers ongoing support to volunteers as they care for children. Bethany also works with the biological parents during the placement to help them identify steps to regain stability and be reunited with their child quickly and safely.

Family preservation refers to the ways we can keep families together and help them thrive. By providing family-focused PREVENTION services for families facing crisis, the goal is to improve parenting and family functioning, keep children safely at home, and prevent unnecessary involvement in foster care.

Prevention services emphasize building on a family's existing strengths while addressing underlying issues such as poverty, lack of access to basic resources, or dealing with challenging situations such as homelessness, unemployment, and a lack of child care. The overarching aim is to prevent the trauma of separation and promote long-term family stability and independence.

Our evidence-based and Family First-approved model is keeping families together! Check out our newly released Annual Report at https://bit.ly/3QjumAM to read more about how we are impacting families nationally and globally!

What if one moment changed everything?

This Family Preservation Month, we’re reminded that the difference between separation and support comes down to access, compassion, and community.

Every family deserves the chance to stay together and the support to make that possible. At Safe Families, we believe in giving families that hope and ensuring that children are safe and families together.

Family Preservation starts with community. When parents feel overwhelmed and isolated, a circle of support can make all the difference. The goal is to support parents by showing up and offering community before a crisis becomes a breaking point.

No family should have to face a crisis alone! Let’s be the community every family should have.

The Safe Families for Children (SFFC) movement is made up of thousands of amazing volunteers who step forward to open their hearts and homes to walk alongside families in crisis. What they do is no small feat.

Meet Brad and Elizabeth, who saw God’s calling to impact every aspect of their life as a Host Family, Ministry Lead, and Financial partner with SFFC.

“We acknowledge our level of engagement is a bit unique! But we couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity it’s provided for us to see the beauty and power of God on display, for all the ways this has spiritually transformed our family, and the joy we’ve experienced as a result of being more deeply connected with Safe Families for Children and the many people tied to it.”

It is because of their commitment to live out radical hospitality, disruptive generosity, and intentional compassion that helps change lives and transform communities.

Check out our newly published 2025 Annual Report that shares how God is growing the SFFC movement to serve more children and families.

When a family faces crisis, parents often rely on family or friends for support. But for some parents, this is not enough or even an option.

In these situations, children can become at risk for neglect or abuse and be separated from their families. No family should experience this. That’s where Safe Families for Children steps in.

Swipe through to see the “with” and “without” of this life-changing program.

Together, we can strengthen families and keep them together, because no family should have to face a crisis without a community.

Stabilizing a family facing crisis and unmanageable circumstances is about reducing immediate stress, building relationships, and strengthening the family unit. It’s not about changing everything but creating enough stability and space so they can find their footing again as a family and move forward TOGETHER.

It is about standing in the gap and providing a network of resources and relationships so families can get back on their feet and thrive!
