These specific projects and programs have been donated to the Allegheny Health Network, UPMC Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, and Allegheny General Hospital. Last week, A Glimmer of Hope visited St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA to present them with their Suzzipad gift. These gloves and socks will help enable breast cancer chemotherapy patients combat neuropathy as well as finger and toenail loss. What started as a way to honor Paul’s mom and her battle with breast cancer has become on the most important days of the year for us at Large Plain. This year, we’re making it bigger than ever and for the first time, we’re moving it to a Saturday so we can make it an all-day event.

Thank you to all who attended our benefit dinner at Casbah. We’d also like to thank the Big Burrito Group who continue to be a bright light in the community and enable us to host such beautiful dinners. Due to the amazing support from Novartis, we raised over $8,000 for metastatic breast cancer research! We hope everyone enjoyed a lovely night out supporting our cause!

Grants from a McCandless-based foundation aim to alleviate a common chemotherapy side effect for breast cancer patients. Several years ago, Allegheny Health Network medical oncologist Casey Moffa had a patient who aggressively researched ways to avoid peripheral neuropathy — nerve damage in the fingers and toes that is a common side effect of the chemotherapy regimens used to treat breast cancer.

That patient, who needed full function in her fingers for her job, ended up submerging her fingers in ice water during her treatments. The treatment was successful in that she ultimately preserved full feeling in her hands.

Since that time, Moffa became aware of a product called SuzziPads, mittens and socks designed to keep extremities cold during chemotherapy. She recommended them to her patients, who had good results.

“Just anecdotally, if you looked at it, it was clearly working,” she said.

Now, local breast cancer patients won’t have to procure SuzziPads themselves. A new $33,000 grant from the McCandless-based Glimmer of Hope Foundation will cover SuzziPads for breast cancer patients at AHN’s largest breast cancer treatment sites, system wide. A similar $13,800 grant from Glimmer of Hope will cover breast cancer patients at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.

What a night! Thank you very much to 100.7, Walnut in Grille in Robinson and of course our wonderful supporters for a very successful Handbag Happy Hour. Congrats to the winners who took home some beautiful new bags! We were able to raise $1,370 for metastatic breast cancer research! We are so grateful to 100.7 (Audacy radio), Walnut Grille and all our supporters who attended a fun Thursday night out.
