On October 14, 1947, Captain Charles "Chuck" Yeager became the first person to officially break the sound barrier. Flying the experimental Bell X-1—which he nicknamed Glamorous Glennis in honor of his wife—Yeager reached Mach 1.06 at an altitude of more than 40,000 feet over the Mojave Desert. This historic achievement ushered aviation into the supersonic era and proved that human flight could safely exceed the speed of sound.

This legendary long-range bomber has served the U.S. Air Force for more than 70 years, becoming a symbol of strength, endurance, and adaptability. On Oct. 11, 1943, Col. Neel Kearby led three of his pilots against nearly 50 Japanese aircraft near Wewak, New Guinea. Tearing through the enemy formation, Kearby shot down six Japanese aircraft during the engagement. For his skill and daring, Kearby received the Medal of Honor. His Medal of Honor and the vertical fin from his crashed P-47 are on display in the World War II Gallery at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force™️.

Originally developed as a cargo transport version of the B-29, the C/KC-97 served as a backbone for USAF aerial refueling through the Cold War. The museum’s display aircraft, christened Zeppelinheim, was flown by the Ohio Air National Guard’s 160th Air Refueling Group and actively supported USAF and NATO units in Europe during Operation Creek Party.
