“Do The Hard Thing!”

“But how can they call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard of Him? And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone tell them unless they’ve been sent? That is why the scriptures say, “Beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news.” (Rom. 10:14-15)

During this morning’s FCA Huddle at Washington Middle School, we had 43 students in attendance. Rowan, Sophie, Jaxon & Brody led this morning’s lesson entitled, “Do the hard thing!” Beckett opened up in prayer, and Evan closed our lesson by praying us out!

Coaches will often ask their athletes to do the “hard things” that will make them better players, so that their impact positively affects the team’s performance! And as athletes, we must take on our coaches’ requests and do the hard things that will enable us to reach our fullest potential! Unfortunately, too many athletes want to play it safe, and are unwilling to take risks. However, doing the hard things is where the greatest growth happens!

In (Rom. 10:14-15), a great point is made… “How can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him?” Similarly, how can our teammates, classmates, and even fans hear about Jesus unless we tell them! As followers of Christ, we are challenged to do something hard like share our faith with others, including those who don’t share our same beliefs! As athletes, we have a unique opportunity to tell those around us about our faith in Jesus Christ and the love He has for all of us! God calls each of us to be disciples, to empower others to share and spread the good news of Jesus Christ, even when it is hard or uncomfortable! We must be bold, strong and courageous. After the lesson, both the girls & boys group discussed the following questions:

1) What are the obstacles in your way that prevent you from sharing your faith?
2) How would it make you feel if the people you shared the good news with decided to follow Christ?
3) What people in your life do you hope will decide to follow Jesus?

REMEMBER:

1. Our testimony speaks louder than words. Be a good example.
2. Pray for those that you will share the gospel with.
3. Walk in love and be a reflection of God’s love to the world.
4. Write down scriptures that you can share with them
5. Keep it simple. You are just sowing the “seed of the gospel.” God will bring about others to water that seed, and then it is the Holy Spirit’s job to grow that seed that results in salvation!

Stay The Path!

“But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold. For I have stayed on God’s path; I have followed his ways and not turned aside.” (Job 23:10-11)

During this morning’s FCA Huddle at Washington Middle School, we had 36 students in attendance. Anna & Kenzleigh led the girls group, while JC & Finley led the boys! This morning’s lesson was entitled, “Stay the path!”

Our leaders talked about how as athletes, we all want to make the final cut and be part of the team! We want to succeed and not fail. And even though we train hard and try our best, many times we fail to make the team. Yet in God’s eyes, we didn’t fail. God had no stake in us making the cut; He already knew we weren’t going to make it. He just wants us to “stay on the path!” He wants us to always follow Him. God is our coach, and we must follow His instructions!

Sometimes God tests us through our sport, our relationships, or our health, and sometimes it just feels like He tests us in every aspect of our life! But you see, God is refining us; He is making us “pure as gold!” The only way we will ever succeed is to persevere and follow God’s ways, regardless of the outcome. And we must always remember, God will work all things together for our good and His glory! In closing, the students completed the following worksheet:

When gold is extracted from the Earth, it is mixed in with a variety of impurities. The value of gold is most realized when gold is purer, so the goldsmith has to refine it. Gold melts at around 2000° F. As the gold melts in the heat of the fire, the impurities rise to the surface where they can be scraped off.

Look again at Job 23:10-11. When life puts us through its fiery tests and trials, we will come out as pure gold IF we stay on God's path and follow his _____________________________

Heed the reminder from 2 Timothy 3:16-17, which reminds us that, "all scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Set The Standard!

"I beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God." (Ephesians 4:1)

During this morning’s FCA Huddle at Washington Middle School we had 41 students in attendance. Brinley, Mya, Brody & JC led this morning’s lesson entitled, “Set The Standard!”

When Clemson University was looking for a new head coach in 2009, Dabo Swinney shared a bold vision, "My vision is to make Clemson so good that all the other programs want to be like us." He got the job. And he hasn't stopped raising the bar since!

Creating a standard to live up to helps us fulfill our potential and ultimately becomes everything we're made to be. It helps us eliminate excuses, reject shortcuts and avoid compromise.

The standards you set define what you strive to become. I've found it helpful to phrase the components of my standard as "I Will" statements.

• Mind: I will .. Ignore the Noise: I will win the battle of the mind, crushing the lies of the enemy that attempt to discourage, focusing on what is true and right (Romans 12:1-2).

• Body: I will .. Keep My Temple Pure: I will honor God by turning away from visual garbage and protecting my body from sexual sin (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

• Spirit: I will ... Keep My Eyes on Jesus: I know that I can accomplish nothing if I get disconnected or distracted from Him and His purposes (John 15).

These "I Will" statements can help you stay focused on who you want to be and how you want to behave. They form the standard that you will aspire to live up to and ultimately the legacy you leave behind. In closing, our students discussed the following questions:

1. What standard will you set for the things you are willing to see, for your mindset, for how you will handle negativity?

2. What standard will you set for how you will keep your body pure and healthy so you honor God?

“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience.” (Colossians 1:9-11)

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” – (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

During our first FCA Huddle of the year on the campus of Washington Middle School, we had 51 students in attendance; Praise God! After welcoming our students, I introduced our Huddle Coaches, Ms. Witmer & Mr. Briner, and then Mr. Briner had all of our student leaders stand and introduce themselves. FCA is a student led ministry; so beginning next week, they will take turns leading!

This morning, we reviewed “The Four,” which is FCA’s method of sharing the gospel using 4 simple icons:

❤️- God Loves You
➗- Sin Separates You
➕- Jesus Rescues You
❓- Will You Trust Jesus

We explained how at the time of creation, unlike all of the animals, God created man in His own image. He breathed life into Adam and he became a living being. Mankind were created with intellect, emotion, and will. God created us to have a relationship with Him! However, it didn’t take long before sin entered the world as Adam & Eve disobeyed God by eating of the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good & evil. That’s when sin fell upon all of mankind, and we were separated from God! But Praise be to God, that the LORD promised to send a redeemer that would conquer sin, death and the grave. And we know that Jesus Christ (God’s Son and Second Person of the Trinity) came into the world and lived the perfect/sinless life that we could not, and rescued us at the cross! And the question remains: Will You Trust Jesus?

Lastly, we talked to the students about the need to live authentic Christian lives; stating that if we act one way in FCA, and then differently in the classrooms and hallways of the school, why should anyone want to come to FCA? If God hasn’t transformed our lives, then why should students believe that He can change them? We empathized to the students that our FCA group needs to be known for the love & kindness that we have for one another! There can be no bullying, disrespecting, or putting one another down if our desire is for others (teachers & students) to see Jesus in us. We reminded our 7th & 8th grade students that we have many 6th graders this year that may be having a difficult time adjusting to middle school, and/or making new friends. They were encouraged to extend love and kindness to everyone, treating others as we would want others to treat us!
