58.2% of LGBTQ+ people in Western Kentucky have no regular healthcare provider. 30% have been refused care because of their identity. Our latest Health Story of the Month brought to you by the Northern Kentucky Health Department breaks down what the data reveals, and who's working to close the gap: https://q***rkentucky.com/lgbtq-health-care-western-kentucky/

Louisville is hosting Creating Change 2027 — one of the largest LGBTQ+ conferences in the country — and last week's kickoff made clear why Kentucky was chosen. "You have organizing in your blood," the Task Force's Fernando Lopez told the room. Task Force President Kierra Johnson set the tone for what's ahead: "It is resistance to dream right now." Mark your calendars for January 27–31, 2027, and read the full story by Dahlia Ghabour at the link. https://q***rkentucky.com/creating-change-2027-kickoff/

Meet Mikhayla Hughes-Shaw (She/Her), a freelance Storyteller & Editorial Contributor for Q***r Kentucky:

"I have loved being a storyteller for as long as I can remember. I started writing when I was a teenager. That love drove me to a career in broadcast and content creation.
I'm originally from the Quad Cities, which is on the border of Illinois and Iowa. I'm q***r, and that's a huge part of why I do this work: I love telling stories and building spaces that empower underrepresented communities.

Right now that looks like helping plan Bourbon & Belonging and working intermittently on the editorial team at Q***r Kentucky. At the end of the day, I feel most purposeful when I'm using my voice for good — and I'm grateful to get to do that in so many different forms.” -Mikhayla

Governor Beshear built his reputation on being there when Kentuckians needed him most. Now, with a book tour, a federal super PAC, and a likely presidential run on the horizon, experts say his focus is shifting, and his governing style may shift with it. We asked political scientists, LGBTQ+ advocates, and state legislators what that means for Kentucky. Story by Alejandra O'Connell-Domenech at the link. https://q***rkentucky.com/beshear-presidential-campaign-ky/

In Western Kentucky, 58% of LGBTQ+ people have no regular healthcare provider. Nearly 70% have never been tested for HIV. And 30% have been turned away by a provider because of who they are.

That's not a gap. That's a crisis.

New data from our 2025 Community Health Survey is out, and the picture it paints of Western Kentucky is stark. Nick Fulton talked to the organizers and care providers working to change it.

Northern Kentucky cities have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars installing AI-powered license plate reader cameras in some of Kentucky's safest communities. Then residents started showing up to public hearings and demanding answers.

The questions they're asking go beyond crime statistics: Who has access to the data? What happens when camera networks share information across jurisdictions? And what does it mean to install a permanent surveillance dragnet in a city that's already among the commonwealth's safest? Story by Pat LaFleur.

In Covington's Mainstrasse, Creative House of Art and Design is a space for q***r community. Opened in December 2020 by "Mr." Chad Cruz, the arts store offers classes, summer camps, and drag drawing events (plus a secret bar tucked inside).

Cruz created the space to be what he wanted as a kid and still wanted as an adult: somewhere people could be creative and be themselves, no explanation needed. Even outside store hours, Cruz and his team can be found leading art classes throughout the region.
