Why not you?

Some of the most valuable ideas in campus recreation aren’t coming from a textbook or a perfect case study. They’re happening on your campus right now.
It could be a program that finally connected with students. A staffing approach that changed your culture. A facility challenge your team found a creative way to solve. A lesson you learned when something didn’t go according to plan.
Those experiences matter because NIRSA 2027 is stronger when the people doing the work help shape the conversation.

Your colleagues don’t just need polished success stories. They need honest experiences, practical ideas, lessons learned, and takeaways they can bring back to their own campuses.

And that’s why it should be you.
You don’t need years of presenting experience.
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
You don’t need to wait until you feel like “the expert.”
If you’ve learned something that could help another professional think differently, solve a problem, avoid a mistake, or create something better—you have something worth sharing.

NIRSA 2027 is now accepting proposals for General Education, Panel, Expo, and Virtual Sessions.

If an idea came to mind while reading this, don’t talk yourself out of it. Take a look at the presenter information and start shaping your proposal.
And if you immediately thought of someone else whose work deserves to be in the program, send this their way.

The conference becomes better when more of our community sees themselves, their challenges, their ideas, and their experiences reflected in it. Your perspective can help make that happen.

You can’t cram five years of experience, missteps, lessons learned, and data dashboard insights into 75 minutes…

…but we’re going to try anyway.

In campus recreation, we know the impact of our work reaches far beyond facility counts and participation numbers. We support student wellbeing, belonging, leadership development, retention, engagement, and community. But if we cannot clearly communicate that impact, it becomes harder to advocate for resources, tell our story, and make strategic decisions that move our departments forward.

That’s where data dashboards come in.

Join Sydney Fanning, Coordinator, Safety Education, Student Development, and Assessment at Washington State University and current member of the NIRSA Assessment Committee; Dr. Sheena Harvey, Director, Fitness and Recreational Sports at the University of Nevada, Reno; and Ali Cross, Director of Recreational Sports at Virginia Tech, on Friday, August 14 at noon Eastern for a conversation about how Virginia Tech transformed raw data into a cohesive dashboard that helps them:

✅ Communicate impact
✅ Identify trends
✅ Improve operations
✅ Make informed decisions
✅ Advance departmental strategic goals

You’ll leave with a better understanding of which inputs to include in your own data dashboard and how to use popular tools to visually communicate the impact of your team’s work.

Campus recreation has a powerful story to tell. The right data can help make sure that story is seen, understood, and supported.

Join us Friday, August 14.

NIRSA’s Leadership & Foundation Coordinator, Cheyenna Mitchell, visited University of Houston-Downtown to connect with the Sports & Fitness staff and tour the Wellness & Success Center — recipient of the 2024 NIRSA Outstanding Facilities Awards. Read more about their facility here: https://nirsa.net/news/nirsa-facility-feature-university-of-houston-wellness-and-success-center/

UHD Sports & Fitness supports student success from Weeks of Welcome to graduation, using campus and community partnerships to build a culture of collaboration and leadership.

Highlights from the visit:

Best year yet — close to 15,000 members and their strongest revenue in over 10 years.

Big moments — hosting the Houston Rockets Basketball Camp, the Bahamas Olympic men’s basketball team (including Klay Thompson, and rostered players, Deandre Ayton, Buddy Hield, Eric Gordon), and partnerships with Comicpalooza hosting the FC26 esports, on campus law enforcement, and on-campus departments in support of many University Traditions.

Club Sports success — back-to-back baseball World Series appearances, wrestling at nationals, and a women’s soccer local league title.

UHD Esports — the city’s premier collegiate esports program, competing with 17 teams across NACE and NECC leagues since 2018. Their gaming lounges are the place to be for students, and they wrapped up their first GatorCon, bringing together these nationally ranked esports competitors and fans.

Thank you to Caleb Wells, Director, and Shaneisha Weir, Associate Director, Sports & Fitness for their hospitality. NIRSA is proud to highlight the collaborative work happening in Downtown Houston! Go Gators!
