We’re delighted to present two sonnets by Diane Raptosh, author of American Amnesiac (Etruscan Press), longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award. Her fourth collection, I Eric America, includes the poem “I’d like to trill you a song about end worlds,” which traveled to the moon in November 2024 as part of NASA’s Artemis mission—becoming part of the Lunar Codex archived at the moon’s south pole.

For her current project, Come Across, Raptosh composes poems through an inventive, constraint-based process. Working with a set of German-language flashcards she keeps at home, she begins each poem by drawing a card at random, allowing its English translation to shape the piece. The words may surface in the title, echo as a refrain, or otherwise steer the poem’s direction. This interplay of chance and rule—the obligation to incorporate the card’s content—has proven a generative force in her recent work.

Stories cross borders. So do the voices we publish.

This World Book Day, we’re celebrating books that carry lived experience, resistance, imagination, and truth across languages, cultures, and generations.

For 50 years, CALYX has amplified writers whose work reaches beyond place—because the most powerful stories don’t stay local. They travel. They connect. They change us.
