💔 They’ve waited. And waited. And waited.
Lou.💙 Darryl.💚 Dennis.💛
They came to us from a really bad situation with their three sisters. Six scared dogs who had experienced very little of what a normal life should look like.
Their three sisters have all been adopted. Lou, Darryl and Dennis are still here.
And they all break our hearts.
These boys had little, if any, experience with so many normal parts of life before coming to the shelter. Cars, houses, unfamiliar doors and new places can still be scary. They're naturally pretty mellow dogs, but when they're overwhelmed, they may freeze or shut down and need some coaxing or even a little physical help getting into a vehicle or through a doorway.
They're not being difficult. They're experiencing things that most dogs learned were safe a long time ago.
All three are also intimidated by men initially. They've become comfortable with some men who have taken the time to earn their trust, while there are others they haven't been comfortable with. If a man lives in the home, we would require them to meet beforehand. They've already been through enough, and we want their next home to be one that lasts. ❤️
We also want to be clear that none of these boys have shown signs of true aggression or ever bitten. When they're scared, their instinct is to retreat, freeze or shut down.
💙 LOU | 5–6 YEARS OLD
Lou is Darryl and Dennis's dad, and once he knows you, he is such a loving, loyal boy.
He bonds deeply with his people and genuinely loves being close to the people he trusts. Lou would be perfectly happy with a quiet life, his special person and all the love to himself, so we think he would thrive as the only dog in his home.
He may also be happiest in a home without men, but he's shown us that he absolutely can form relationships with men who take the time to earn his trust.
There is so much love in this boy just waiting for someone to choose him.
💚 DARRYL | 2–3 YEARS OLD
Darryl is shy and unsure of people, but other dogs are his safe place. He absolutely loves them. 🐾
A confident dog helps him relax, come out of his shell and realize that maybe the world isn't quite as scary as he thought.
He doesn't need someone to rush him. He just needs someone willing to give him the time to feel safe.
💛 DENNIS | 2–3 YEARS OLD
Dennis is the one who breaks our hearts the most.💔
He's still so scared that sometimes he simply freezes. He won't take a treat from your hand. He waits until you look away before he feels safe enough to eat it.
And he loves toys.
We know because he plays with them at night, when the shelter is quiet and nobody is watching. 💔
Dennis isn't a dog who can simply be pushed outside his comfort zone until he "gets used to it." We've learned that when he's put into situations he isn't ready for, he doesn't adjust. He shuts down, and progress he's made can disappear.
Dennis has to figure out this world at his own pace.
He does really, really well with dogs who are mellow but confident. A calm dog who isn't afraid of the world can help show Dennis that maybe he doesn't need to be either.
High-energy dogs and high-energy people are harder for him because they're unpredictable. And for Dennis, predictability is what makes him feel safe.
There is a playful little dog underneath all that fear. We see glimpses of him. We just want him to someday feel safe enough to let someone else see him too.
These boys aren't looking for someone to change them overnight.
They need someone who will meet them where they are and show them, little by little, that they're finally safe.
Their sisters found their people.
Now it's their turn. ❤️
