Flight call variation and vocal repertoire in the Hooded Grosbeak Hesperiphona abeillei

While they do have a larger vocal repertoire than Evening Grosbeak, the call type thing applies to this species as well, which is not surprising given its a sister taxa to Evening Grosbeak.

It's always nice to acknowledge accomplishments, and publishing a paper is a worthy reason to celebrate!

Not too bad, I think that's 6 papers published in the last 9-10 months. Many of them were my ideas/design, and then we put the team together.

Congrats team!

Finches!

About a month ago I went birding with Melanie Uhlir in South Otselic, Chenango County for finches and we had some good luck with Goldfinches, Pine Siskins, Purple Finches, Evening Grosbeaks, and Red Crossbills, including this male Red Crossbill we were able to save. It appeared that it wasn't actually hit, but a vehicle had driven over the top of it and it was stunned.

After about 40 minutes in the car the bird easily flew off and perched in a tree.

Finches, Finches, Finches!

Dozens of Evening Grosbeaks and American Goldfinches, a couple Purple Finches (one can be seen on the ground right of the middle platform feeder) and an occasional Pine Siskin have been visiting the Feedercam in the Adirondacks.

This is a collaborative feedercam with SUNY-ESF at the Newcomb campus in the Adirondacks (Sponsored by Finch Research Network and Aspen Song Wild Bird Food).

Evening Grosbeak Road to Recovery Project

For decades this brightly colored finch was a beloved winter backyard feeder bird during its irruptions from northern or montane breeding areas. Recent studies show that Evening Grosbeak has lost more than 90% of its North American population since 1970. Collaborators from the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program at the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Finch Research Network, and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Powdermill Avian Research Center formed an international working group with members from across North America focused on the species’ conservation as part of the "Road to Recovery" bird conservation initiative.

Evening Grosbeak Research

Paper published….Ranges of Evening Grosbeak (Hesperiphona vespertina) call types 1 and 2 documented from community science and targeted placement of automated recorders

It was uncertain how much the ranges of Type 1 and 2 Evening Grosbeaks overlapped during the breeding season, and this paper confirmed how much the overlap is.

It's always nice to acknowledge accomplishments, and publishing a paper is a worthy reason to celebrate!

Paper published….Flight calls of Eastern and Western Purple Finches (Haemorhous purpureus) are diagnostically different.

The Finch Research Network would love to fund more research on the two Purple Finches. Reach out if interested.

Evening Grosbeaks!

SUNY-ESF Newcomb, NY Adirondacks Feedercam (Sponsored by Finch Research Network and Aspen Song Wild Bird Food) is hopping again this morning with Goldfinches, Evening Grosbeaks and more.

For decades this brightly colored finch was a beloved winter backyard feeder bird during its irruptions from northern or montane breeding areas. Recent studies show that Evening Grosbeak has lost more than 90% of its North American population since 1970.
