🎨 Sunday: Art Hollow Never Sleeps

✨ A Week of Service. A Week of Magic. Day 8
As one week ends, another begins.
Today brings volunteers Ann and Steve, who continue caring for the lower level of Mary E. Marshall, now better known as Haylee & Sara's Art Hollow.

Their projects include winterizing the well, relocating art and other supplies that could freeze, and addressing whatever else the day presents. It's the kind of work most visitors never see. But it's also the kind of stewardship that makes camp stronger.

Ann and Steve don't simply volunteer at Nawakwa. They care for a space they've helped create. And because of that care, future campers, artists, and visitors will be able to enjoy it for years to come.

🍂 Saturday: Operation Winter Is Coming
✨ A Week of Service. A Week of Magic. Day 7
The workweek may have ended, but the volunteer magic continued.

October's Our Nawakwa Camp Care Day is one of the most important volunteer events of the year, marking camp's transition toward winter. Volunteers mounted the plow on the truck. Timbercrest Yurts, Starview, Pooh Corner, and Picnic Point were cleaned and closed for the season. Seasonal equipment was protected. Fire extinguishers and smoke alarms were removed from buildings that will remain closed through winter.

Because so much had been accomplished earlier in the week, volunteers were also able to tackle several projects from the "nice-to-complete" list.
Door stops were installed.
Bunk beds were reassembled.
Leaves, sticks, and acorns continued to lose their battle against determined volunteers.
Most importantly, everyone gathered around tables filled with friends who increasingly feel like family.

Featuring: ON volunteers, winter prep, plows, bunk beds, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and approximately one million leaves.

✨ Friday: Volunteer Magic
✨ A Week of Service. A Week of Magic. Day 6
Friday arrived with gusty winds and temperatures that felt far more like winter than fall.
Apparently nobody told the volunteers.
Members of McDonell High School’s Kolbe Club and REACH returned to camp ready to work alongside Our Nawakwa volunteers.
Together they:
✅ Moved mattresses
✅ Washed windows inside and out
✅ Cleaned and winterized the waterfront shed
✅ Spread fresh sand at the beach
✅ Tackled leaves and acorns
✅ Returned long-serving craft tables to their original role as dining tables

Visitors John Murphy and Brooke from Midwest Family Radio stopped by to experience camp during one of its busiest volunteer days. As if on cue, one of Nawakwa's piebald deer made a special appearance for them. Meanwhile, forestry work continued elsewhere around camp.
Everywhere you looked, something was happening.

🌧 Thursday: Rick Versus the To-Do List
✨ A Week of Service. A Week of Magic. Day 5
Thursday delivered a welcome inch of rain.
One outdoor project was postponed, but volunteer Rick simply shifted gears and kept going.

LED lighting upgrades.
Electrical outlet replacements.
General repairs.
Winterizing the showerhouse.
Rick even stayed overnight to keep projects moving forward.

And then there was the stove.
As often happens in the woods, a critter had found its way somewhere it didn't belong. After dismantling part of the appliance, it became clear that replacement made more sense than repair. Unless someone really wants to tackle this…

That discovery highlighted an important need.
Nawakwa is currently seeking donations of two replacement stoves, preferably Energy Star models.

At the same time, another Nawakwa cog returned home. Thanks to volunteers who helped with transportation, the new to us camp truck is back and ready for Wisconsin winter.

One rainy day.
A long to-do list.
A whole lot accomplished.

💜 Happy Heavenly 18th Birthday, Haylee 💜

Today, October 21, we celebrate Haylee and the beautiful life that continues to touch so many hearts.

Haylee was kind, creative, and wonderfully her own person. She saw the world a little differently and made it brighter because of it. Though she never had the chance to come to Nawakwa, her spirit is woven into our community through the joy, imagination, and creativity inspired by Haylee & Sara's Art Hollow.

Today, we think of the young woman she would have become, the milestones she should have reached, and the countless lives she continues to impact. We are honored to help carry her memory forward.

Haylee will always be loved, always be remembered, and never be forgotten. 💜🦉✨

🌲 Wednesday: Quiet Doesn't Mean Empty
✨ A Week of Service. A Week of Magic. Day 4

Not all camp magic comes from volunteers.
While projects happened throughout the week, Gene's Heating & Cooling was onsite installing new HVAC equipment as part of an energy efficiency improvement project made possible through a grant from the Royal Credit Union Foundation. (We'll share more about that exciting story soon!)

Their work may not be as visible as raking leaves or cleaning buildings, but it's helping make camp more comfortable, efficient, and sustainable for years to come.

Sure was fun to share Nawakwa and all the good happening with Murph and Brooke last Friday. Happy to report no one blew away and one of the local piebald deer even made an appearance.
