NH Sierra Club Chapter

NH Sierra Club Chapter Enjoy, explore and protect the earth. NH Sierra Club is the local volunteer-run chapter

Currently, the Chapter's top priority is supporting environmental protections and promoting a clean energy future. With issues like jobs, the economy and rising energy costs on everyone's mind, it's sometimes tough to take a minute to think about climate change --even though it's a problem that will affect all of us. But the fact is that the solutions to climate change are also the solutions that

will help boost our economy and create good jobs at the same time. The good news is that in the Granite State there's a clear consensus that we need to build a clean energy future. Citizens, businesses, and state and local governments are all taking action to curb global warming. NH joined the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) to cap regional carbon emissions coming from utilities. It has invested the revenues from the RGGI funds to help homeowners and businesses to increase their energy efficiency. Eight cities and towns in NH have signed the US Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement to curb their carbon pollution and 164 NH towns have passed a resolution calling on national leaders to take action for a clean energy future! By investing in the technologies and industries that will provide America with that clean energy future, we can save money by saving energy and build a clean energy economy with new jobs and incentives for new business. Now that NH is doing its part its time for our national leaders to do there's! Get involved in our campaign today to help create a clean energy future for America.

We had a local gathering about the Trump Administration's plan to end the Roadless Rule. The White and Green Mountains' wildlife, the economy and the people who explore these wild places have been transformed by the abundance in the absence of more roads. This article shared the stories. We will be planning for another gathering here in Concord. You are welcome in advance - TBA.

Conservation groups oppose federal effort to roll back rule protecting 235,000 acres in New Hampshire and 25,000 acres in Vermont.

The Trump Administration is rolling out the red carpet for companies to drill wherever they please in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Help us send a message to oil and gas companies: hands off the Arctic!

Speak up now!

We must oppose leasing in the Refuge — and demand companies stay away.

Protect the Arctic Refuge. Oppose the leases.

Share this post and tag ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Chevron, REPSOL, Hilcorp, Santos, and Shell to demand they stay out of the Arctic.

Look out for the modern day dinosaurs on the road🐢🐢🐢

On this beautiful spring day, we want to share a reminder to be on the lookout for turtles on the roads. It was a bit chilly the last week, but today is very warm day and turtles are out and about, traveling and crossing roads - we even helped the beautiful snapping turtle in this picture cross one of our local roads this morning.

Up until yesterday we have been primarily admitting male turtles due to car hits, which we commonly see early in the season, but we’re getting to the time where we will begin to see more and more of the mama turtles traveling and looking for a suitable place to nest and lay their eggs. Nesting season is May through July, so we are in the primary time of year where turtles really need all of our help keeping them safe while they make their migrations.

✅ Some advice if you find a turtle in the road:

⚠️ Please be super cautious! Many people are distracted on the roads, so please be safe and diligent anytime you’re near the road and prioritize your safety no matter the situation 👀

🚸 Always help a turtle cross the road in the direction they were already headed. They know where they are going and will just turn around and try again if moved back to the same side they came from. Call/text us anytime when in doubt about a situation, we are here to help: (603) 417-4944.

📝 Special note: snapping turtles will commonly nest on the side of the road, so if they are not actively crossing and you are able to safely do so, observe them before moving them across, in case they are just nesting and didn’t plan to travel across the road.

❤️‍🩹 If you do come across an injured turtle in the road, please give us a call or text at (603) 417-4944. We always greatly appreciate if you’re able to transport the turtle to us, or we can reach out to our wonderful network of Turtle Transporters to arrange for someone to meet you instead.

For resources on how to hold turtles for when helping them cross the road, check the comments for links to our website articles - snapping turtles require special handling, you only hold want to hold the back 1/3rd of the body but NEVER by the tail. If you have a snow shovel you can keep in the car and/or a blanket, this can help a lot with helping them cross with minimal handling.

Our last note is you can contribute to conservation research by reporting sightings of turtles to NH Fish and Game’s Reptile and Amphibian Reporting Program (RAARP) where you can send a photo and specific details about where you found the turtle, which helps NHFG monitor populations and know where they are crossing roads. We will link to the RAARP program where you can report turtle sightings in the comments.

Thank you for caring about our shelled neighbors 💚🐢

🚨 CALL TO ACTION FOR ALL NEW HAMPSHIRE RESIDENTS—Before THURSDAY

On Thursday, May 21st, the NH House of Representatives will vote on HB 707, as amended — a landmark landfill siting reform bill that has been SEVEN YEARS in the making.

HB 707, as amended by the Senate, will mandate consideration of the broad community impacts of landfills and allow local citizens to participate in decision-making. It incorporates the key provisions of HB 1189 and has earned broad bipartisan and community support from:

✅ The NH House Environment & Agriculture Committee
✅ The NH Senate
✅ Governor Kelly Ayotte
✅ NCABC, Bethlehem residents, and thousands of supporters across the Granite State

This legislation passed resoundingly in the House earlier this year. Now it is time to finish the job. “We are asking the House to “Concur with HB 707!”

📧📞 PLEASE CALL AND/OR EMAIL YOUR NH HOUSE REPRESENTATIVES TODAY and urge them to VOTE TO CONCUR with HB 707 as amended.

FIND YOUR REPRESENTATIVES at https://gc.nh.gov/house/members/
Tell them:

➡️ New Hampshire citizens deserve stronger landfill siting protections

➡️ Communities deserve a stronger voice in protecting their environment and quality of life

➡️ Vote YES to concur on HB 707

This is our opportunity to stand together for responsible landfill reform, to ensure local voices are heard and included in New Hampshire’s landfill siting process, and that local agreements and ordinances are upheld.

Please share this post and encourage friends and family to contact their representatives before Thursday’s vote.
