Concerned United Birthparents

Concerned United Birthparents CUB, founded in 1976, is a nonprofit organization of parents who have lost children to adoption. We welcome all those who have been affected by adoption.

We provide support and education about the life-long impact on all who are separated by adoption. CUB's purposes are providing mutual support for coping with the ongoing challenges of having been separated through adoption, working for adoption reform in law and social policy, preventing unnecessary family separations, and educating the public about the realities and life-long impact of adoption.

Our growing list of online support groups provided monthly at no cost to attendees is just one example of the valuable resources made possible by memberships and donations. Memberships include our many in-person groups around the country, our online forum through the Band App, and a discount on the annual retreat. We also have our elections coming up soon and you need to be a member to vote.

We invite you to join in our shared mission to help our community that has been impacted by adoption loss. If CUB has helped you over the years, please consider becoming a CUB Member, renewing your CUB Membership, donating to CUB, or sponsoring a membership for someone who could use the support we offer. Our annual membership is just $45.00. Annual membership dues and donations fund CUB, and we are proud to be independent of any adoption agency-related funding, ever. CUB donations are tax deductible.

Concerned United Birthparents (CUB) has a 50 year long history as the only birth/first parents group by birth/first parents to support parents of adoption loss, adoptees, and family members separated through adoption. We are an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that was founded in 1976, formed by parents who have lost children to adoption. We provide support and education about the life-long impacts on all those separated by adoption, and we welcome all those who have been affected by adoption. We advocate for family preservation and support and encourage legislation that helps keep vulnerable families together. We support open OBC records for Adopted People, citizenship rights and protection for international Adoptees, and provide peer support group options for anyone impacted by adoption no matter where they live.

We had a beautiful gathering for the Twice Lost Remembrance Day on June 7th. Thank you to all who joined in as grievers and as witnesses. It was an important time hear shared stories of loved ones passed in an honoring, reverent, caring space together. Thank you to Jennifer Joy Phoenix for facilitating this special time together. Thank you to the team putting this together, Amy Barker, Linda Reboulet, Louise Okuri, Candace Cahill, Beth Jaffe, Mimi Janes and especially Mary Scott who instigated this idea. We plan to hold this event each year to honor those we grieve their loss twice, and to those who mourn that deserve our community support.❤️

Supporters of California SB 381, heads up!

The Health Committee Hearing in Sacramento has been changed to June 23rd, instead of the 16th. This is due to ongoing discussions with Health consultants. Please pass this on to anyone you know who may be planning on showing up to support this important bill. Thank you for all the support!!

Every year we offer scholarships for the retreat for those who experience financial barriers. Donations come from generous people like you, who maybe has been to a retreat before and knows how special and beneficial the CUB retreat experience is. If you are able to make a donation, to help someone attend who may not otherwise be able to come, thank you!
If you can’t make it this year, please consider donating and pay it forward to help others needing this special in-person time together with CUB. Thank you!

In the past, we have awarded scholarships for the CUB Retreat and are doing so again in 2026. We work to keep the cost of attending our annual retreat affordable. However, we recognize it can still be a significant burden on some individuals. So every year, we award a few qualified individuals a scholarship to ease the financial costs of attending. If you would like more details or to apply for a CUB Retreat Scholarship, applications are open now: https://forms.gle/64gNYgepaVen4U8b6
The deadline to apply is July 12th, 2026.
Recipients will be notified by July 27th, 2026.

Things are heating up in California for SB 381. If you or someone you know gave birth and relinquished in California, were an adoptee born in California, and all those allies who support open records please lean in.

Shared from CAAR for California:

Our bill, SB 381, is scheduled to be heard in the Assembly Health Committee next Tuesday the 16th at 1:30 pm.

CAAR has a call to action for people to call Mia Bonta (Chair of Health)'s office to urge her to vote yes on SB 381 in the Health Committee hearing next Tuesday. Please share it with CUB members and others who might not be on the page, or might not look at the page? We want all supporters to call, but calls from birth mothers are especially significant.

In a few days we will make a post to call all members of the Committee, but we are starting with the chair.

Hello,
My name is ________ and I am a constituent (if applicable) (and an adoptee/birth parent/adopted parent - if applicable). I’m calling to urge Chair Bonta to vote aye in the Health Committee on June 16th in support of SB 381 as written.
Adult California born adoptees must be given unrestricted access to their original birth certificate. This is a matter of inclusivity, equal rights, and civil rights, as it will restore the same rights to adoptees as all other California born individuals enjoy.
