It’s not easy to spot in nature, nor in these photos, but a green heron has been hanging out on this log at Warner’s Pond. In the second photo, you can see that it’s caught a fish.

The Water Chestnut Pull at Warner’s Pond this past Saturday morning was a success, in part because previous pulls have been so productive. As we made our way around the pond, we no longer saw the large mats of water chestnuts that once covered wide stretches of the water. Years of community effort are paying off! Let’s continue to be vigilant and keep this aggressive invasive plant out of Warner’s Pond and the larger Concord River watershed.

Massachusetts is currently experiencing drought conditions, with declining groundwater and below-normal streamflow. Those conditions are evident at Warner’s Pond, where the water level is low and the current is slow. And yet, the views remain magnificent, and the habitats in and around the pond are still teeming with life. Swifts, swallows, great blue herons, ducks, and even an osprey diving for fish were all part of the morning.

One of the day’s highlights was meeting a father and his two sons who have invented a robot to help remove water chestnuts. Along with other elementary school students in Acton, they’re using science and engineering to make a real difference in their community. It’s an inspiring reminder that stewardship can begin at any age. Learn more about their project here:
