Founded on May 10, 1916, just one year after began in Detroit, we became the fifth-oldest club in Kiwanis International. Our Club was created by a group of prominent Columbus businessmen and had an initial membership of 163 members.

Often referred to as the “Downtown Club,” we have contributed much to the community during our 110-year history. In 1921, we supported the establishment in Ohio of a rural police force, which later became the Ohio Highway Patrol. In 1923, we established the Kiwanis Health Center in the Linden neighborhood of Columbus, with a primary goal of reducing the then high infant mortality rate. In 1937, we played a central role in the creation of the Columbus BoyChoir, which later moved to Princeton, New Jersey and became the American BoyChoir.

In 1977, we co-sponsored the creation of Crime Solvers Anonymous and remained active in its financial support, as well as in providing board members. In 1980 we created, with the cooperation of the Columbus City Schools, the Columbus Kiwanis College Fair, which still annually helps to connect high school seniors with representatives from over dozens of colleges and universities.

More recently, we’ve awarded thousands of dollars in grants to local nonprofits supporting children and families across Central Ohio. We also sponsor the Salamander Garden within the two-acre Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden at Franklin Park Conservatory, providing interactive, nature-based experiences that connect kids to the natural world. Our work today continues the mission we’ve carried for over a century: making a lasting difference in the lives of children.

Earlier this week, we served our monthly meal at Manna Cafe and were fortunate to have donate the meal. It was a day after Cinco de Mayo, but the guests didn’t mind one bit! In fact, many asked for seconds. Thank you for your generosity and tasty meal for those in need! And thank you Kiwanians for continuing to show up and serve your community.
