AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT TRENT BOWERS AND THE WORTHINGTON SCHOOL BOARD:
This morning, as some Worthington families were getting ready to go to school, they were greeted with ugly flyers on their doorstep filled with hateful speech. As some school principals and teachers were arriving at their place of work, they too found the same disgusting flyers dropped in close proximity to their school buildings. While I won’t give these hateful messengers any amplification here, I will say this: In Worthington, we welcome ALL. What we won’t accept are people who spread their hate under the cover of darkness. And we won’t tolerate this.
We’re disgusted. We’re outraged. And we’re sad. For our friends, neighbors, students and staff in our schools who would say they’re not surprised by this because, on some level, they’ve lived with it their entire lives: We believe them. Even though we’ve never walked in their shoes, we stand with them. We work hard every day to make Worthington Schools a community where everyone is welcome and this is a stark reminder of why our work is so important.
While this has happened before, Worthington Police were immediately called and have remained engaged all morning. Our Board of Education has reported this to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) who tracks hate groups and extremist activity. We have no reason to believe the cowards who left these flyers plan to do any more than litter, but their attempt to intimidate will not be minimized or overlooked by this District, School administrators, counselors and our security teams are aware of this situation and will be both vigilant and ready to support students and staff.
We work hard every day to make Worthington Schools a community where everyone belongs and feels welcomed. So, while hate may reside among us, it has no place here. We value and celebrate the rich diversity of our school community today, tomorrow and always.
We see you, we love you, and you matter in Worthington! These people can stick their flyers where the sun doesn’t shine.
