KNOW THE SIGNS

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office is partnering with the Shelby County Domestic Violence Coalition to highlight the many roles our community partners play in supporting survivors.

At SafeHouse, part of their role is helping our community recognize the signs of domestic violence and understand the realities of abuse.

We see these signs every day in working with survivors:

1. Controlling behavior: controlling what someone does, who they see, where they go, or how they spend money
2. Jealousy and constant accusations
3. Emotional abuse: including put-downs, manipulation, and threats
4. Physical harm: including injuries or frequent “accidents”
5. Isolation: cutting someone off from family, friends, or support systems

These aren't simply relationship problems or “red flags.” They can be signs of abuse, and recognizing them matters.

A stronger, safer community starts with awareness.

Part of the Shelby County Domestic Violence Coalition’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month campaign.
