The looser we hold onto this life, the tighter we can hold onto the next. Living for what this world offers will eventually disappoint us because only living for God can truly satisfy our soul.
When we make people, possessions, relationships, success, or even our own dreams into gods, we will eventually find ourselves empty, dissatisfied, and hungry for something more. We were never created to find our identity in things that can be taken from us.
The only way we can experience lasting peace is to trust God and look to Him as our everything. People change, circumstances change, seasons come and go. Those who once walked closely with us may eventually become strangers. The things we worked so hard to build can disappear overnight.
The more we try to hold onto everything, the more anxious we become about losing it. But the more we surrender to God, the more freedom we experience.
Jesus never promised us a life without suffering, disappointment, rejection, or loss. He promised us something far greater. He promised us Himself. He promised never to leave us or forsake us.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying this life. God has given us so much to be grateful for. We can love deeply, laugh freely, build beautiful memories, and appreciate the people He places in our lives. But we must never confuse the gifts with the Giver. The moment we expect something temporary to satisfy an eternal soul, we set ourselves up for disappointment.
I am learning that peace is not found in having everything work out the way we hoped. Peace is found in knowing that even when nothing works out the way we planned, God is still good. He is still faithful. He is still our Father.
One day we will leave everything behind. Our homes, possessions, accomplishments, and even the bodies we have lived in. What will matter then is our relationship with Jesus.
May we never become so attached to this world that we forget we are only passing through. May we love people without making them our savior. May we enjoy what God has given us without allowing it to take His place in our hearts.
The less we need this world to make us happy, the more we can experience the joy of knowing Jesus.
This life is only for a little while. Eternity is forever.
He is not just enough for us. He is everything.
