Did You Know.... J.C. Penney? A Mason?

PENNEY, JAMES C.
(1876-1971). Founder of the J.C. Penney Co. Lost his fortune in the 1929 crash, but made a brilliant comeback which he attributed to his Christian faith. Known as the "Golden Rule" merchant. Raised in Wasatch Lodge No. 1, Salt Lake City, Ut., 1911. Member of all bodies and awarded the 33° (SJ) on Oct. 16, 1945. Also given the Distinguished Service Award by the Gen. Grand Chapter, RAM in 1958.

REVERE, PAUL

(1735-1818). Raised in St. Andrew's Lodge of Boston in 1760; G.M., 1795-97. His real name was Paul Rivoire de Romagneu, the son of a French count. We are apt to remember him primarily for the "midnight ride," but he was a celebrated gold and silversmith and his works are prized possessions.

SOUSA, JOHN PHILIP
(1854-1932). Member of No. 10, D.C., 1881. His father's name was Samuel Ochs. John Philip got the name of "Sousa" from the first letters of Samuel Ochs United States . This famous bandmaster's most noted work is The and Forever. Member of the RAM, KT and Shrine. At the time of his death he had been a more than 50 years.
