Can you make it to the Austell City Council meeting tomorrow night?

The Austell City Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed Infill Overlay District, which would help create a more walkable, connected downtown by allowing housing options like ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) and cottage courts by right, alongside other policies that support thoughtful growth and increased housing choice.

Public support matters. Speakers typically have up to 2 minutes to share their thoughts.

To sign up to speak, email [[email protected]] or [[email protected]] before 3:00 PM on Monday with the subject line: "Public Hearing - Infill Overlay District."

Please also copy [[email protected]].

When we build more housing, it takes pressure off the market and that means more affordability for everyone. 🏘️

Carter Ray brought that message to the Cobb County Board of Commissioners. More supply gives higher-income buyers new options, so they stop outbidding middle-income families for older homes. The whole chain benefits.

Cameron is a KSU student and the intersection at Frey Road and Skip Spann Connector has him worried. 🚢

Hundreds of students cross there daily. Last year someone was seriously injured doing exactly that. And when the interstate backs up during rush hour or closures, that traffic spills onto Frey Road, making it even more dangerous.

Cameron is calling on the county to work with KSU on real solutions: a signalized crosswalk at an alternate crossing, a pedestrian bridge, or an underpass. Students shouldn't have to risk their safety just getting to class.

Kamora came to the April 28th meeting with numbers that are hard to ignore. πŸ“Š

Fair Oaks is a majority-minority community with 3,500 Black voters and 2,600 Hispanic voters. But voter turnout sits at just 58%, and the community is split across seven different precincts. That confusion led to 66 provisional ballots in the 2024 presidential election alone.

Meanwhile, East Cobb precincts are drawn cleanly. Fair Oaks residents are waiting hours to vote, taking time away from work and childcare. Kamora is calling for the maps to be redrawn to stop leaving Black and brown voters behind.

Jared is a KSU engineering student and he came to the April 28 Cobb Commissioner meeting with a clear ask. πŸ“‹

Frey Road near campus is dangerous, and he's not just raising the alarm. He's proposing three concrete fixes: a scramble crossing at Frey Road and Skip Spann Connector, quick-build temporary safety solutions after incidents instead of waiting years, and a county crash analysis committee to drive faster infrastructure improvements.

πŸ“š June Book Club with A Better Cobb πŸ“š

Join us on Monday, June 8th at 7PM at Contrast Artisan Ales as we discuss *Abundance* by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson.

From housing and transportation to energy and infrastructure, *Abundance* explores what it would take to build a future where communities can thrive and why so many systems struggle to deliver the basics people need.

Whether you’ve finished the book or just want to join the conversation, all are welcome. Grab a drink, meet new people, and talk about the ideas shaping our communities. 🍻

Amelia put it plainly: pedestrians on Frey Road are an afterthought. 🚢

The intersection at Frey Road and Skip Spann Connector serves off-campus housing, shuttle parking, the convocation center, and the rec center. But people crossing there have to navigate five lanes of traffic plus a sixth turning lane, with drivers coming over a blind hill who may not even see them.

That's not a crosswalk. That's a hazard.

05/14/2026

Matthew is a fourth-year KSU student who got tired of waiting and started showing up to commission meetings. πŸŽ“

Walking Frey Road to campus means dodging speeding trucks, waiting at crosswalks where lights won't change, and stepping over glass and bumpers left from crashes. When he raised concerns, KSU said it was a county road. So he took it to the county.

He served on a crash studio analysis panel and came up with recommendations including scramble crossings, road widening, and lower speed limits on Frey Road.
