We look forward to welcoming you to the 2026 SECAC Conference this October in Winston-Salem! We have a very full week planned, with three full days of sessions and lots of opportunities to explore the many art institutions the city has to offer.

As you make your travel plans, please review the Conference-at-a-Galnce as it outlines the main events of the week. The schedule includes information about the receptions, events, and general structure of the week’s activities. With so many great presentations planned for this year, we have a full slate of breakout sessions Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm. We encourage everyone to attend the full length of the conference.

💚 About Maria Knuckley Robinson:
Dr. Maria Knuckley Robinson is an artist, art educator, and higher education leader serving as Assistant Professor and Curriculum Director of Studio Art and Pre-Art Therapy at Salem Academy and College. She holds an EdD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina, an MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design, an MAT in Art Education, and a BS in Business Administration. Her studio practice explores women’s resilience, memory, grief, domestic labor, and the relationship between the body and place through installation and material-based processes. Her teaching and research focus on inclusive pedagogy, interdisciplinary learning, curriculum design, and connecting studio practice to professional and creative opportunities. As an NAEA Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Commissioner and past Treasurer of the North Carolina Art Education Association, Robinson’s work centers on belonging, sustainability, alignment, and meaningful connections among artists, educators, students, and communities.

"Interwoven: Threads, Patterns & Disruptions" evokes both the literal and metaphorical: the warp and weft of hand-made, home-grown, and self-reliant creative practices; the liminal nature of a city in transition, shaped by transplants, climate, and growth; and the patterns that emerge and disrupt across time, craft, and culture. The theme acknowledges the region’s textile heritage, where weaving connects Winston-Salem to Greensboro, High Point, and beyond while highlighting how the arts continue to interlace histories, communities, and futures.

💚 About Emily Baker:
Emily Baker is Manager of Community and Academic Learning at Reynolda House Museum of American Art. She grew up in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina, and around the vibrant arts community in Asheville. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Art History at UNC Asheville and master’s degree in American History at Western Carolina University, she has spent more than a decade working in museum education and public programming, connecting audiences with the stories behind art and history. She views museums as a space for inquiry and discovery, working directly with college students to give them the opportunity to engage with visual and material culture. As a first time SECAC attendee, she looks forward to connecting with other arts professionals and students.

We are honored to have interdisciplinary artist and educator Sonya Clark as the 's Keynote Speaker!

🧵 About the Keynote Speaker:
Sonya Clark is the Winifred Arms Professor of Arts at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Previously she chaired the Craft/Material Studies Department at Virginia Commonwealth University for 12 years. A graduate of Amherst College, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she holds four honorary doctorates. In addition to being a Guggenheim Fellow, she has received awards from United States Artists, Pollock-Krasner, Trellis Foundation, Art Prize, Anonymous Was a Woman. She has been granted residencies and fellowships at the Smithsonian, Civitella Ranieri in Italy, Indigo Arts Alliance in Maine, Yaddo in NY, the American Academy in Rome, and Black Rock in Senegal, among others. Her work has been exhibited and collected in more than 500 museums and galleries worldwide.
