Neuromodulation is expanding beyond the brain. In July 2025, the FDA approved the SetPoint System, the first clinically proven neuromodulation treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
The device works through a concept called neuroimmune modulation: a small implant stimulates the vagus nerve, which in turn activates the body's natural anti-inflammatory pathways. This approach leverages the direct connection between the nervous system and the immune system to reduce inflammation without traditional immunosuppressant drugs.
For the neuroregulation community, this approval represents a fascinating expansion of the field. The principle that electrical stimulation of neural pathways can produce targeted biological effects is the same foundation that underlies neurofeedback and other brain-based interventions. The applications are simply growing broader.
