There is a story in this one picture.
“What story?” one might ask.
And this is where I would respond: A story of accepting the responsibility of REPRESENTATION.
It was six years ago, in 2022, when Asian and Pacific Heritage Month was first celebrated here in Clarksville, Tennessee. The celebration was spearheaded by our very own Montgomery County Government. The following year, in 2023, the City of Clarksville sponsored the celebration.
Then, in 2024, things changed. Both the county and the city were no longer able to support the celebration, and a small group of dedicated volunteers was left with a choice: Do we carry on the tradition, or do we drop the ball?
They chose to keep moving forward.
The group collaborated with Asian Pacific Islander (API) TN, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and from that partnership, API Clarksville continued the work of celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in our community.
Today, we are preparing for our sixth year of celebration, and our hope is to continue growing and, most importantly, to welcome more representation from the many Asian and Pacific Islander cultures that make up our community.
So, if you live in Clarksville and are of Asian or Pacific Islander heritage, and you have the heart to share your culture, we need you!
For our 2027 celebration, the countries and cultures currently represented include Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Samoa, Hawaii, China, and Thailand.
But Asia is a vast continent, and the Pacific is home to countless cultures, traditions, and stories. We know there are many more API heritage individuals and families living right here in Clarksville.
Your culture deserves to be seen.
Your heritage deserves to be heard.
Your story deserves to be shared.
If you are interested in joining our volunteer group and representing your heritage, please comment below. We would love to connect with you and share more information about how you can become part of this celebration.
Let’s continue the tradition.
Let’s make our community more inclusive.
And together, let’s accept the responsibility of REPRESENTATION.
Thank you all!
