Today, we recognize an important historical date in the fight for civil rights and social justice. At the March on Washington, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech united Americans to do more than dream, but to act. Rooted in his values of nonviolence, equality, and justice, the speech continues to inspire generations of peacemakers and activists to work towards a more just, equal, and peaceful world.

Our partners at Springfield G92 are calling for faith leaders from all walks of life – as well as members of the general public – to join us in this struggle. In the coming days, we will announce an event and invite allies to come to Springfield. Let’s defend our community!

A “beloved” Haitian pastor and community leader in Springfield was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Thursday morning, Aug. 20.

Pastor Gilbert Joubert Adrien was detained at the Sunoco on South Limestone Street, according to advocates with Springfield G92.

Advocates said the move was “a profound wound” to the “embattled” Haitian community.

Another Haitian man, Victor Yonel, was also taken into custody.

Yonel’s wife, who was in the car with the two men and a woman at the time, told advocates that ICE released her and took the men.

Back-to-school time is usually full of excitement and anticipation. But for many immigrant families, this year it carries anxiety and stress in the midst of ICE terror.

As ICE snatches innocent people off the street, Cincinnati Public Schools wants to take away one of the most precious resources we have for our immigrant families - their school ELL social workers.

Having social work staff dedicated to serving the English Language Learner community (ELL) has been a lifeline. From supporting Emerson Colindres and his family, to staying late to make sure their students got home safe after off-duty police officers posed as ICE at several Cincinnati schools - we need them. Especially now.

Join Ignite Peace at the Cincinnati School Board Meeting today, Monday, August 17 at 5:30PM to protect this vital part of children's lives. We can't let these social worker positions be eliminated in such a time as this.

Thank you, The Rachel Maddow Show, for helping us sound the alarm on the psychological terror ICE is inflicting on our Haitian neighbors by covering BOTH of the vigils we organized with our partners. Between Aug. 2 and Aug. 9, a combined 1,200 Ohioans peacefully stood in solidarity and made sure that ICE wouldn't get away with its covert cruelty going unnoticed.
