Meet Michael Howard, Founder & CEO of Nichefire, turning cultural data into foresight for the world's biggest brands. Here's what he's building:
Michael is a Cincinnati native who studied at the University of Cincinnati and has spent over a decade at the intersection of AI, cultural analytics, and brand strategy. His first business, launched while he was still a student, brought modern consumer insights to small and mid-sized Cincinnati businesses. Nichefire is where all of that experience converged.
Nichefire is predictive AI for cultural trend signals, detecting emerging cultural shifts and forecasting where they're headed 12 to 18 months out, so brands can act before competitors see it coming. Michael founded Nichefire in 2017 as a competitive analysis tool, then pivoted to predictive AI in 2022 after watching customers get blindsided by shifts that were visible in culture long before they showed up in sales or survey data. "Culture moves first and is the ultimate unlock for picking up on the unknowns," he says. Today Nichefire serves some of the world's largest brands, including NestlΓ©, P&G, Walmart, and Lululemon.
Michael sees Cincinnati's difference as its edge. "Cincinnati doesn't try to out-Silicon-Valley anyone, and that's its advantage," he says. "This city has one of the densest concentrations of consumer brand expertise in the world" β P&G, Kroger, and dozens of agencies built around them. For a company selling predictive insights to major brands, he says, that proximity beats a bigger funding market.
His view of Cincinnati has shifted along the way. "I used to think of Cincinnati as a place you build from despite the location," he says. "Now I see it as a place you build from because of it." That corporate legacy isn't old-economy baggage β it's infrastructure: decades of brand-building expertise and research talent that startups get to draw on.
For Michael, the mission is simple: help brands see cultural shifts before they hit the data, and see where they're headed next. https://nichefire.com/
