Chico State engineering and computer science students are, quite literally, taking their learning to new heights.

Working with lecturer Josh Miranda, these Wildcats are flying camera-mounted drones over North State orchards and using software they developed to help growers more accurately estimate walnut yields before harvest.

Along the way, they’re gaining valuable hands-on experience while tackling a real challenge facing one of California’s most important agricultural industries.

The beauty of Chico State is found in every corner of campus, from the creek to the towering trees. And sometimes, it's nestled among the branches. 🦉

Several years ago, Steve (Biological Sciences, '88) and Gina (Social Science, '89) Snider discovered a pair of great horned owls nesting on campus. Since then, they've become unofficial ambassadors for the owl family, sharing binoculars, answering questions, and introducing students, alumni, families, and visitors to the resident owls they affectionately named Maple and Art.

This spring, the arrival of owlets gave even more people a reason to stop, look up, and experience the wonder.

"It's nice to be able to share a natural moment with people," Steve says. "And it's even better that it's on this beautiful campus."

🎓 135 years ago today on June 20th, Chico Normal School celebrated its first graduating class in 1891! Chico Normal School was a teacher-training institution, opening in 1889. What eventually evolved into Chico State today, started with only 90 students and 5 faculty members.

For Tom Ward’s students, part of the excitement of coming to class is seeing what he’ll be wearing that day.

The Chico State alumnus (History, Philosophy, ’96; Credential, ’02) has gained national attention for using fashion as a way to engage his middle school history students and bring lessons to life.

His story is a good example of how educators continue to find creative ways to connect with students and create lasting learning experiences. Ward's students may remember the outfits, but they’ll also fondly recall the teacher who made history feel relevant, engaging, and fun.
