Every Wildcat’s path to Chico State looks a little different. ❤️🐾

“I transferred to Chico State to finish my degree, but I found so much more along the way,” said Raquel Rubio (Liberal Studies, ’25), who is now pursuing her master’s in art history. “I got involved, met some incredible people, and made memories that became just as important to me as earning my degree.”

During , we’re celebrating the experiences and accomplishments of students like Raquel. And transfer enrollment continues to grow. This fall, Chico State welcomed 2,096 transfer students—up more than 5% from last year!

On a 200-acre farm near the Sutter Buttes, you’ll find something a little different growing among Northern California’s familiar agricultural landscape. 🌱

California poppies, yarrow, lupine, native grasses, and nearly 200 other species are being grown for restoration projects across the state, and Chico State alum Mason Shorts (Agriculture, ’20) is helping lead the work.

As director of farming operations for Heritage Growers Native Seed and Plant Supply, Shorts has found a career that brings together the agricultural skills he developed at Chico State and his longtime interest in plants and the outdoors.

“I get to work with the environment, I get to work in nature, with all these plants that are important for the whole ecosystem that we live in,” he said. “I was able to connect everything together.”

From “dinosaur kid” to paleontologist, Bradley Cobian is putting his Chico State experience to work, one fossil at a time. 🦴

As a student, Cobian (Geology, ’24) helped uncover and study fossils from prehistoric horses, camels, rhinos, and mastodons at a newly discovered fossil site south of Sacramento. The hands-on research experience helped launch his career in paleontology.

Today, Cobian’s work takes him across the country, where he helps identify and protect fossil resources that could otherwise be lost during development.

He also remains connected to the Gateway Science Museum, California State University, Chico, where some of the fossils he helped uncover as a student are still on display.

Bradley Cobian (Geology, '24) shares how the community and natural geography he found on campus inspired him to pursue a career as a paleontologist.

🎓 135 years ago today on June 20th, Chico Normal School celebrated its first graduating class in 1891! Chico Normal School was a teacher-training institution, opening in 1889. What eventually evolved into Chico State today, started with only 90 students and 5 faculty members.
