Raise the Floor Alliance

Raise the Floor Alliance RTF provides legal and advocacy support to Illinois-area worker centers to win policies that advance justice for low-wage workers.

Over the past few decades, there has been a growing trend toward temporary, part-time, and contingent work and an increase in low-wage, low-quality jobs. With the exit of major industries and the growth of multi-national corporations, the solid middle-class jobs that offered salaries and benefits are disappearing. Now, nearly one-third of the Chicago region's workforce are trapped in dead-end jobs

. Together, we must raise the floor for workers who perform cleaning, manufacturing, day labor, restaurant, warehouse, domestic work, temp work, and other labor essential for the functioning of our society. A united voice, Raise the Floor Alliance was founded by Chicago area worker centers who build power with low-wage, non-unionized, Black and Brown communities across the region. The mission of Raise the Floor Alliance (RTF) is to ensure that low-wage workers have access to quality jobs and are empowered to uphold and improve workplace standards. Both an alliance and a support center, RTF brings area worker centers together into a collective voice for economic policies that foster dignified, family-supporting work. RTF members include:

Arise Chicago
Chicago Workers Collaborative
Centro de Trabajadores Unidos
Chicago Community & Workers' Rights
Latino Union of Chicago
Warehouse Workers for Justice
Workers Center for Racial Justice

American workers are being squeezed in their wallets and at their jobs. We can't event take our paid leave benefits without the feeling of risking our livelihoods. Work-life balance is about maintaining dignity on and off the job.

It’s been a week since the minimum wage went up, so now what?

The law is straightforward: your employer must pay your full wage on time. If caught stiffing their staff, businesses pay even more in fines and damages.

It’s always a good time to start protecting yourself in case you ever have to deal with wage theft.

Record your hours, track your checks, save whatever you can. If the time comes, make sure to have the receipts in order.

Your wage is your right. You have the ability to file wage complaints in Chicago, Cook County, and the State of Illinois. Visit @ cookcountygov to learn more.

HEAT ALERT: As record-breaking temperatures climb, so does the risk of extreme heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for outdoor workers who need to make ends meet.

Did you know that Illinois currently has NO worker safeguards for extreme heat? Heat illness can be life-threatening and causes debilitating long-term health issues. Extreme heat stress also increases the risk of occupational accidents, including dizziness, fainting, and contact burns.

Extreme workplace heat is preventable with the proper safety standards. Until every employer takes heat safety seriously, it's up to us to look out for one another.

If you're working in the heat:

💧 Drink water often.
🌳 Take breaks in the shade or a cool area.
👥 Check in on your coworkers and watch for signs of heat illness like dizziness, nausea, confusion, or heavy sweating.

Employers should also be taking steps to protect workers by:

✔️ Providing free drinking water
✔️ Scheduling regular rest breaks
✔️ Creating shaded or cooled recovery areas
✔️ Adjusting work schedules during extreme heat
✔️ Training workers to recognize heat illness

Let’s keep our communities safe while we continue fighting for workplace protections.

✔️ Proporcionando agua potable gratuita
✔️ Programando descansos regulares

Another blow to DHS' illegal immigration policies. This is huge news for those wrongfully detained by ICE, including our clients who were moved from Chicago to Michigan while in detention.

The 6th Circuit said detainees must have a chance to argue for their release.

This year's failed effort to stop tipped workers wage increases reignited a conversation around tips as an inconsistent income to make ends meet. At the same time workers are struggling to cover rising costs like groceries and gas, restaurants have advocated to freeze bringing tipped workers up the minimum wage. That’s the same minimum wage the rest of adult Chicagoans are already getting.

An effort to phase out the subminimum wage in Chicago was a done deal—until it wasn’t.

When people have access to legal support, outcomes change ⚖️ — families stay together ❤️, people remain housed 🏠, and communities are stronger 🤝

That’s why we’re urging Illinois lawmakers to fully fund the Access to Justice program at $50 million. This investment would expand access to critical legal services across the state.

Take action now and help make it happen 📣

Toma acción ahora y ayúdanos a hacerlo posible 📣 https://bit.ly/4wuClLI
