Raise the Floor Alliance

Raise the Floor Alliance RTF provides legal and advocacy support to Illinois-area worker centers to win policies that advance justice for low-wage workers.

Over the past few decades, there has been a growing trend toward temporary, part-time, and contingent work and an increase in low-wage, low-quality jobs. With the exit of major industries and the growth of multi-national corporations, the solid middle-class jobs that offered salaries and benefits are disappearing. Now, nearly one-third of the Chicago region's workforce are trapped in dead-end jobs

. Together, we must raise the floor for workers who perform cleaning, manufacturing, day labor, restaurant, warehouse, domestic work, temp work, and other labor essential for the functioning of our society. A united voice, Raise the Floor Alliance was founded by Chicago area worker centers who build power with low-wage, non-unionized, Black and Brown communities across the region. The mission of Raise the Floor Alliance (RTF) is to ensure that low-wage workers have access to quality jobs and are empowered to uphold and improve workplace standards. Both an alliance and a support center, RTF brings area worker centers together into a collective voice for economic policies that foster dignified, family-supporting work. RTF members include:

Arise Chicago
Chicago Workers Collaborative
Centro de Trabajadores Unidos
Chicago Community & Workers' Rights
Latino Union of Chicago
Warehouse Workers for Justice
Workers Center for Racial Justice

Another blow to DHS' illegal immigration policies. This is huge news for those wrongfully detained by ICE, including our clients who were moved from Chicago to Michigan while in detention.

The 6th Circuit said detainees must have a chance to argue for their release.

This year's failed effort to stop tipped workers wage increases reignited a conversation around tips as an inconsistent income to make ends meet. At the same time workers are struggling to cover rising costs like groceries and gas, restaurants have advocated to freeze bringing tipped workers up the minimum wage. That’s the same minimum wage the rest of adult Chicagoans are already getting.

An effort to phase out the subminimum wage in Chicago was a done deal—until it wasn’t.

When people have access to legal support, outcomes change ⚖️ — families stay together ❤️, people remain housed 🏠, and communities are stronger 🤝

That’s why we’re urging Illinois lawmakers to fully fund the Access to Justice program at $50 million. This investment would expand access to critical legal services across the state.

Take action now and help make it happen 📣

Toma acción ahora y ayúdanos a hacerlo posible 📣 https://bit.ly/4wuClLI

March with Black and Immigrant workers THIS FRIDAY for International Workers' Day!

May 1st is a historic, international day of action born from Chicago's fight for the eight-hour work day. We're gearing up to mobilize hundreds of workers against Trump's attacks on our communities. On this day we will unite in solidarity with each other to say the Trump administration can't divide us!

Over the last year, Trump has attacked labor protections, installed ICE and CBP in our neighborhoods, and pulled support for working families. When we rise up united against attacks on our communities, we build strength to fight back.

Join us and the worker center contingent THIS FRIDAY at 1 pm in Union Park! Please RSVP to meet up with the contingent: https://www.raisetheflooralliance.org/may_day_2026

"In some cases, according to worker advocates, food products might have more protections than employees. Workers of a food production facility that uses apples told Arise Chicago that, when it’s really hot in the summertime, there are rooms dedicated to keeping the fruit chilled.

“The workers are not provided that same accommodation,” said Adam Kader, Arise Chicago’s public policy director. “And the ones that are working in those cooling rooms are not provided with anything to wear.”

Since last year, worker advocates and industry representatives in Illinois have negotiated over a potentially groundbreaking piece of legislation that would require employers to protect laborers from extreme temperatures.  In private discussions, the Illinois Farm Bureau, a powerful lobbying organi...

Protect our workplaces, Invest in our communities! Yesterday, 70+ workers across our coalition traveled to Springfield to demand real protections for workers across Illinois. We met with legislators to push for solutions that provide workplace safety and economic stability for working families. Together with our coalition members, we’re fighting for Extreme Temperature Safety, Paid Family and Medical Leave, and a Just Wage for All!
