This summer, the United States will host the FIFA World Cup—the largest sporting event in the world—at a moment marked by rising authoritarianism and escalating attacks on immigrant communities.
While the tournament will generate billions in revenue for FIFA and corporate sponsors such as Coca-Cola and Bank of America, those profits will depend on the labor of hundreds of thousands of workers who are likely to face dangerous, exploitative, and abusive working conditions.
Mega-events like the World Cup do not happen by accident. They are built through layers of contractors, staffing agencies, subcontractors, and temporary labor - undermining unions, blocking access to stable jobs, and hindering the enforcement of workers’ rights across the board.
FIFA has already shown us where they stand with respect to workers’ rights - with the 2022 World Cup bringing widespread worker exploitation, trafficking, injuries & preventable deaths.
The Temp Worker Advocacy Coalition, anchored by GLOW, is keeping eyes on FIFA this summer and demanding that all workers - regardless of race, immigration status, criminal record or job classification - deserve fair pay, safety and enforceable workplace standards.
