Freedom was never handed to us.
It’s something our people fought, organized, dreamed, and sacrificed for—and from the South Side to the West Side and every block where Black families continue to create possibility out of challenge, the legacy of Juneteenth is alive.
It’s alive in young leaders finding their purpose.
In mentors showing up.
In communities investing in each other.
In every act of resistance, joy, excellence, and love.
We celebrate today because our history is powerful.
But we also celebrate because our future is, too.
And that future is sitting in our classrooms, our community centers, our summer programs, and our neighborhoods right now.
That’s why we’re asking our village to help us .

In honor of 1865, the year enslaved Black Americans in Texas finally learned they were free.
