A new mural is bringing color to and celebrating community pride in Washington Park!

Last week, we gathered with residents and local artist Ahmad J. Lee, known as Reco the Great, for an ice cream social to celebrate the unveiling of CIC’s first mural through our new mural pilot program.

Located beneath the CTA entrance at 6246 S. King Drive, the mural reflects the vibrancy and rich cultural history of Washington Park—from the Bud Billiken Day Parade and DuSable Museum to jazz, the Great Migration, and the African diaspora.

This project is about more than beautifying a building. It’s about investing in the neighborhoods where our borrowers live, work, and serve—and creating spaces that reflect the people and stories that make Chicago’s communities unique.

Many thanks to Reco the Great for his incredible design and installation, and to the community members who joined us to celebrate!

As we wrap up our summer intern highlight series, we’re excited to introduce our final intern spotlight:
Lauren!

Lauren is currently studying Child Development and Family Life at Prairie State College and plans to
pursue licensure in speech-language pathology after graduating in December.

As a CIC intern, Lauren has gained experience learning about property management, nonprofit work, and
the community development programs that help preserve affordable rental housing throughout the
Chicagoland area.

Through this opportunity, Lauren has developed professional skills in a corporate setting while gaining a
deeper understanding of CIC’s mission and the work that supports stronger communities.

We’re grateful for the contributions of all our summer interns and the perspectives, energy, and dedication
they brought to CIC this summer.
