In many African cultures, we understand that when a loved one leaves this earthly life, we do not simply stop remembering them. We return to the places where they rest. We pray. We tell their stories. We remember their birthdays and the days that marked their lives. We teach the children who they were and what they gave to the world.

Today, October 8, we remember Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson Sr., born October 8, 1941.

To the Jackson family, may today bring comfort in knowing that your father's life continues to live through the people he inspired.

To Chicago—the city that became so deeply connected to his life's work—we honor a city that has repeatedly produced and nurtured leaders whose voices have reached far beyond its neighborhoods and across the world.

Educators FROM Gateway 26 give back to every community they live and breathe in, working in four countries lately: the United States, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Senegal. Through Global Hand, Gateway26, the group is collecting books and supplies, including a shipment already being prepared to support teaching and learning.

The vision reaches beyond classrooms. The organization also teaches, farms, and works to establish wintering places that protect elders. Its focus is helping young people learn to live peacefully and care for people and nature.

This campaign is just getting started, and early support can help build a foundation for work that reaches youth across the globe.
