COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD

What an incredible honor for Pullman Tech Workshop.

We are proud to receive the Community Impact Award from Chicago CRED, presented by Arne Duncan.

This award belongs to every student who has walked through our doors willing to learn something new, every instructor who has put a tool in someone’s hands, and every partner who has believed that opportunity can change the direction of a life.

Our partnership with Chicago CRED has allowed us to do exactly what Pullman Tech was created to do — create opportunities, teach real skills, build confidence, and strengthen our communities through the trades.

We believe there is incredible talent in our neighborhoods. Sometimes people just need someone to believe in them, give them an opportunity, and put the right tools in their hands.

A huge thank you to Arne Duncan and the entire Chicago CRED team for recognizing our work and, more importantly, for continuing to invest in the people and communities we serve.

We’re proud of this award — but we’re even more excited about the work still ahead.

A picture really can say a thousand words. 🛠️

But these moments tell an even bigger story.

From learning the basics of carpentry to picking up new tools, working together, and seeing an idea become something real, these are the moments that make the work at Pullman Tech Workshop so meaningful.

Every project is more than wood, tools, and finished pieces. It is about learning, confidence, creativity, connection, and creating memories along the way.

We are grateful for the participants who continue to show up ready to learn and grow, and for the partners who help make these experiences possible.

🔨 NEW INSTRUCTOR ALERT! 🔨

Please welcome Ben, our newest instructor at Pullman Tech Workshop!

Originally from London, Ben brings 15+ years of carpentry experience to our Handywoman Training program. He’s been working alongside Tony to give participants hands on experience with carpentry, woodworking, and basic cabinetry skills.

This week, participants have been working on an ongoing woodworking project: building a table from the ground up. 🪵

They’re learning how to use more than 10 basic tools while practicing skills like:

🔹 Pocket screw joinery
🔹 Using chisels
🔹 Hinges and hardware
🔹 Laminating table legs
🔹 Basic cabinetry and woodworking techniques
🔹 Measuring, fitting, joining, and assembling

Today, Ben is working with Ms. Anita on chiseling and creating the joinery for the table legs, while participants continue building their confidence through hands on practice.

And that's the beauty of our Handywoman Training program. Participants aren't learning just one trade. They're getting exposure to a variety of skills, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, drywall, and general handyman skills.

Yesterday, Dan introduced the class to basic electrical concepts, including wiring and what participants may encounter when working inside an actual wall.

Every project gives participants another opportunity to practice, ask questions, identify areas where they need additional support, and build confidence with the tools and skills they're developing.

Small projects. Real tools. Practical skills. Growing confidence. 🛠️

🔨 Wednesday = Carpentry Day at Pullman Tech Workshop!

Our September 15 Handyperson Cohort is getting hands on with basic carpentry alongside our new instructor, Ben, and Tony! 👏🏾

This week, participants are building tables while learning how to work with different tools and techniques, including pocket screws, joinery, chisels, hinges, and more.

It’s not just about building a table. It’s about learning the tools, understanding the techniques, and building confidence through practice. 🛠️

THIS is what Pullman Tech Workshop is all about.

Today, Donovan, our Workshop Manager, and Nick had the privilege of recognizing DaShawn as Pullman Tech Workshop’s Intern of the Quarter—and sending him home with a brand-new set of DeWalt drivers!

Deshawn earned this.

He has shown up, put in the work, learned, grown, and demonstrated the kind of attitude and commitment we want every young person who comes through our doors to carry with them.

At Pullman Tech, we believe that when someone is willing to work hard and learn a trade, we should do everything we can to put the tools, skills, confidence, and opportunities in their hands to build their future.

And today, we got to literally put those tools in Deshawn’s hands.

A HUGE thank you to our friends at LiveWire Construction and BlackRock Construction for providing these beautiful new tools and continuing to invest in the next generation of skilled tradespeople. Partnerships like these aren’t just donations—they are investments in people.
