Ten heavyweight Pullman cars travel eastbound on the Union Pacific near Hermosa, Wyoming, on October 10, 1951. One of the most famous businesses in American history, the Pullman Company served travelers from 1867 to 1968. Yet Pullman was not itself a railroad. It ran no trains and owned no tracks beyond those at its shops. Instead, the company built, owned or leased an enormous fleet of passenger cars, mostly sleepers, which railroads operated under contract. In many ways, Pullman was a giant hotel company on rails.

“Banish the black, burn the blue and bury the beige. From now on, think pink.”

Taking a cue from the 1957 film Funny Face, this young homeowner in Pullman National Historical Park chose a soft rosé for her dining room walls. Ice-grey upholstered chairs, creamy white trim, a modern brass light fixture and mirrored wall art complete the fresh, sophisticated setting.

Published in Chicago’s Inter Ocean on October 21, 1899, this dramatic headline announced the Pullman Company’s $20 million takeover of the Wagner Palace Car Company, its largest competitor in the sleeping-car business. The consolidation brought Wagner’s extensive fleet and railroad contracts under Pullman’s control, effectively ending the long rivalry between the two palace-car companies. The deal increased the capital of the Chicago-based Pullman Company to $74 million and further cemented its dominance of luxury sleeping-car service throughout the United States. Although the companies were combined, the article reported that existing rates for berths would remain unchanged.

Sheldon W. Govier waited for his train with Pullman’s Administration Building clocktower rising beyond the tracks. An Appellate Court clerk, he was among the Illinois Central commuters who checked their watches against the clock they affectionately called “Little Ben.”

Seeing a photo of people who are no longer with us can come as a shock. For a moment, there they are again, together around a table, smiling as they did on an ordinary day in Pullman.

Betty Saunders, Billie Wunder Chiagouris and Nancy Gahan gave so much of their time to this community. They were faithful volunteers who helped welcome visitors, share Pullman’s stories and keep its history alive. We have lost all three in recent years, and we miss the warmth and dedication they brought to this work.

Their legacy lives in the place they cared for and in the people they inspired to care for it, too. We will honor them by continuing the work they helped make possible and by remembering the kindness they brought to it.
