Covenant Kids Congo Community transformation through clean water, healthcare, education, agriculture and nutrition, economic development, and child protection

Covenant Kids Congo is a partnership between The Evangelical Covenant Church, World Vision, and the Covenant Church of Congo (CEUM). We of the Covenant Church in the US and Canada have been serving Christ together with our brothers and sisters of the CEUM in DR Congo for the last 80 years. Covenant Kids Congo combines the wonderful ministry strengths of the CEUM with World Vision’s proven development model to build a better world for children. As a country, DR Congo has been devastated by war. Child mortality in DR Congo is among the highest levels in the world, due to high rates of waterborne illness and malnutrition. DR Congo is a place of both transcendent beauty and enormous need. Come alongside our Congolese brothers and sisters in Christ, and walk with the children of Congo toward a brighter future.

Before Daniel's school had drinking water, getting a drink could mean missing class.

“During the break, we used to go to the spring." The spring was about two kilometers from school, and by the time the children returned, they were often late.

Then a standpipe was installed at Daniel’s school.

“Since we’ve had water at school, I no longer have to fetch water from the neighbor’s, nor from the source.”

Having water right at school meant Daniel could spend more of his school day learning.

When we met Alpha in Karawa in 2023, she was 9 years old and in fourth grade. After her father left the family, her mother was caring for six children on her own. For years, they lived in a house where rainy nights meant getting out of bed and waiting for the rain to stop.

Then Alpha’s mother joined a community savings group.

She began saving what she could. Over time, she was able to buy things her children needed for school. Eventually, those savings helped her build a new house for her family.

For Alpha, the new home changed the way she thought about what might be possible.

“As long as my mother remains in the Saving Group, I can’t see anything stopping my studies.”

Through Covenant Kids Congo, families in Gemena and Karawa continue to have access to programs like savings groups that help them work toward greater stability for their children. Support CKC through the link in our bio.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves;
ensure justice for those being crushed.
Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless,
and see that they get justice.

“Personally, I had given up hope of ever living in a new house like this one and continuing to study until I finished.”

A few years ago, 9-year-old Alpha remembers what rainy nights used to mean for her family in Karawa, DR Congo.

“When it rained, we couldn’t sleep; we had to wake up and stay up until it stopped raining.”

Alpha’s mother was raising six children on her own. Their home was in poor condition, and when the rain came, their clothes and school notebooks got wet.

Then her mother joined a savings group near their home and began putting money aside. Alpha remembers watching things change “little by little.”

“From all the money she had saved, she was able to buy me clothes, shoes, and uniforms for the new school year.”

Her mother kept saving and was able to build the family a new home. It also gave Alpha confidence about staying in school.

“As long as my mother remains in the Saving Group, I can’t see anything stopping my studies.”

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

The expert in the law replied,
“The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Please join us in praying for our friends and family in the northwest DR Congo where authorities have confirmed a case of Ebola. The affected area is approximately 60kms south of Gemena, where the Covenant Kids Congo Ledia Area Program is located.

The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo has now spread to seven provinces in the country, local authorities said. It’s the fastest-growing outbreak on record.

“My name is Alpha. I’m 9 years old, I’m in the fourth year of primary school, and I live with my mother in Karawa.” This is how Alpha introduced herself when she shared her story with us in 2023.

For years, Alpha and her family lived in a home that didn’t keep out the rain. “When it rained, we couldn’t sleep; we had to wake up and stay up until it stopped raining. Our clothes, notebooks, and all our belongings got wet. It wasn’t easy for us to go through all that.”

Things began to change when Alpha’s mother joined a local savings group. She started saving money, and little by little, she was able to provide more for her family. She bought Alpha clothes, shoes, and a uniform for the new school year. Eventually, she saved enough to build a new home.

“Since we’ve had our new house, we now sleep in good conditions. Our notebooks, clothes, and beds are well protected, and so are we.”

Alpha was already dreaming about her future: “I’m dreaming of becoming a teacher when I finish school. My favorite lesson is moral and civic education, and I love playing dinette with my friends.”

🙏🏾 Join us in prayer for DR Congo.

Continue to pray for those responding to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Pray for wisdom and strength for healthcare workers, World Vision staff, local leaders, and others working to protect communities and prevent the spread of disease. Give thanks that the children and communities where Covenant Kids Congo serves remain outside the affected region, while remembering families elsewhere in the region who are facing illness, loss, and uncertainty. Ask God for healing and protection in the midst of this outbreak.

As students across the United States and Canada head back to school, remember the children and young people of DR Congo in your prayers. While their school year follows a different calendar, pray for students in Gemena and Karawa as they learn and grow. Ask God to provide safe places to learn, equipped and encouraged teachers, and opportunities for every child to pursue their God-given potential. Pray especially for children who face barriers to education because of lack of resources, illness, or other challenges.

Pray for the local leaders who are helping communities build stronger futures. Give thanks for pastors, community leaders, World Vision staff, volunteers, and families who are investing in clean water, health, nutrition, livelihoods, education, and child well-being. Ask God to give them wisdom, perseverance, and creativity as they work together toward lasting change.

Lift up the children and families participating in Covenant Kids Congo sponsorship and the sponsors who walk alongside them. Pray that these relationships would be a source of encouragement and connection, and that children would know they are valued and prayed for.
