Transformative Justice Law Project Prison abolition, transformative justice, & gender self-determination.

We use our legal access and our privilege as people on the outside to further the prison abolition movement and support people on the inside. We work in three project areas:

LEGAL SERVICES

We provide free, zealous, life-affirming, and gender-affirming holistic criminal legal services to low-income and street based transgender and gender non-conforming people targeted by the criminal legal system

. EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS & TRAININGS

We create and distribute information, resources, and training curriculum for lawyers and social service providers who work with people targeted by the criminal legal system. SUPPORT COMMUNITY SURVIVAL AND ORGANIZING ON THE INSIDE

We use our attorney access and attorney-client relationships on the inside to listen to the wisdom of and respond to the needs of those locked up. We help distribute resources and connect people to their peers, friends, family, allies, advocates, and the larger prison abolition movement.

Due to space and scheduling issues, we are not holding in-person Mobilizations in March. We have added a limited number of virtual appointment slots for Cook County Name and Gender Marker Change support on March 11th and March 18th. Please complete an intake and sign up for a slot using the link in our bio. We will be back in person in April and . You can also fill out an intake to be added to our waitlist for our regularly scheduled monthly Virtual Mobilizations. Since the November 2024 election, TJLP has seen a 50% surge in demand for our services. Trans people across Illinois are rushing to secure accurate IDs, Passports, gender marker corrections— critical shields against discrimination in housing, employment, school, and public life.

Since 2011 we’ve already helped over 5,000 people affirm their names and identities. Now, we need YOU to help us meet this unprecedented moment.

We are not just filing paperwork; we are securing the right to exist safely and authentically. Your donation today directly funds:

* Filing fees for those who can’t afford them.

* Court support so no one stands alone.

We will continue to keep you posted as there are more developments. Follow for more updates as well. On November 6, 2025, in a short and negatively impactful ruling steeped in callousness and cruelty, the United States Supreme Court in a 6-3 ruling issued a stay on the preliminary injunction that was allowing trans, nonbinary, and inters*x people to obtain a passport with the s*x designation that aligns with their identity as the ACLU lawsuit, Orr v Trump moved through the courts. We honor the life and legacy of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, and we will strive to keep fighting! To hold on to our beliefs, our wishes, our wants and our desires. We will continue to show up for our communities, and keep close to our hearts her steadfastness in the struggle for a more just and inclusive world. If you ever had the chance to meet her, you know the light and fierceness that she brought into the spaces she graced with her presence. Thank you, Miss Major. Rest in Power. ❤️
