NABE firmly and unequivocally opposes the proposed English-only mandate for Head Start.

English acquisition does not require English-only education. Children can develop strong English proficiency while continuing to learn, grow, and communicate in their home languages.

A child’s home language is not a barrier. It is an asset—deeply connected to family, culture, identity, learning, and development.

NABE is calling on all members, affiliates, educators, families, researchers, advocates, and community partners to submit public comments opposing this harmful proposal.

The public comment period closes October 6, 2026. Every comment matters, and every voice must be heard.

We are also excited to welcome Alondra Garcia, WIABE President and Milwaukee Public Schools educator, as our afternoon plenary speaker.

The 2026 WITESOL Conference will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2026, in Verona, Wisconsin. This year’s conference theme is “Practice with Purpose: Multilingual Educators Pushing Back and Moving Forward.”

💰 Monetary Donations: You can make a direct, tax-deductible contribution through the MPS Foundation at mpsfdn.org/donate. Select “Lincoln Avenue Elementary School Fund”. The funds will be first used to support the school’s classroom and teacher needs, followed other areas of greatest need as determined by school leaders as we work to support the school now and in the future.

✏️ School Supplies & Item Drives: We are welcoming school and teacher supplies for Lincoln Ave students and staff. You can drop off items at MPS Central Services (5225 W.
